money on Sara. The girl is going to have G wrapped around her finger in no time.”
“I should have Grady be her sparring partner today. Give them a chance to work out all that attraction they’ve got going. It will also give Sara the opportunity to go up against someone new.”
“And…there goes our man, G. He’s heading into the gym.” Dom laughed. “This is going to be good.”

Sara ran on the treadmill and listened to Macklemore rap to her about not holding back. Grady strolled in and lifted his chin in acknowledgment. She mimicked his gesture and continued to pound out her miles. Sure, he was a handsome man, but there was no way she had a crush. Richard appeared before her and pointed to his watch. Slipping the earbuds out of her ears, she responded, “I’ll be done soon. Are you ready to wrap my hands?”
“Yeah. I’ll work the bags with you for about twenty minutes, and then I’m going to have Grady spar with you. I want to see where you are against an opponent you don’t know.”
Slowing the speed, she began to walk. “I don’t want to spar against him.”
“What happened to your motto, ‘Make me a badass no matter what it takes’?”
“It’s still my motto. But I have to live long enough for that to become possible. If I spar against Grady, you’d better have 911 on speed dial. He’s going to knock me out.” She stepped off the treadmill and wiped her face with a towel. “It’s going to be a massacre.”
“No, it’s not. This is going to give you the opportunity to see how good you are. A man who comes after you is not going to expect you to have any skills. So the first couple of minutes in a confrontation is going to be where you dominate. Remember everything that I’ve taught you. Your best defense is to do the unexpected.” Laying his hand on her head, he smiled. “At five feet five inches, the odds are not in your favor. But…you can use the attacker’s force against him and probably prevail.”
“Words. It’s all words, Richard.”
“I’ve been training you for eight months. And I’ve given you everything you need. Now you have to believe that what you’ve learned is enough.” He led her out of the gym and they walked into the room where they sparred. “Having Grady here is a perfect opportunity. He has no idea what you can do, so this will give you an opportunity to see how far you’ve come. Badassery is yours, believe me.”
“I hope to God you’re right. Because, if you’re not, then I have a concussion in my near future.”
“Grady isn’t not going to use force against you. He may try to kiss you, but that’s about it.”
“The man isn’t interested in me. Trust me, I’m very good at picking up signals, and he isn’t sending any.”
A loud bark of disbelief came out of Richard’s mouth. “You have the worst radar in the world. You couldn’t pick up on a signal if it was red and flashing in your face.” He patted her head again and grinned. “I’ve witnessed at least a dozen men try to pick you up, and you completely miss it.”
“Really? Like who?” She glanced around the room and studied the men who were in the cages, sparring. “Can you point them out to me?”
“No!” He turned her around and started wrapping her hands. “Let’s give G a shot at you. He’s a good guy, and I, for one, would like to see what happens between the two of you.”
“So…I’m cheap entertainment.”
“Yep.”
“Great.” Twirling her ponytail with her free hand, she started to chew on her lip. “I’m not ready to spar with someone like Grady.”
“Yes, you are. You’ve been at this long enough to build up muscle memory. We’ll run through some scenarios, and all he’s going to do is try to stop you. But he’s not going to be able to, because I’m an amazing coach. I’ve taught you how to escape and evade. That’s your goal, remember. In your situation, that’s all that matters.”
“Said the man who is six feet five inches,
