later!â
âScrabble rematch tonight?â I call back.
He doesnât answer. All I hear are his usually slow footsteps racing down the hallway.
âSomething wrong?â Lemon asks.
I frown at the closed door. âDonât know.â
Because Dad usually wonât leave for work until he gives me a hug. If Iâm in the shower or getting dressed, heâll wait for me to come downstairs so we can go through our morning routine before he leaves. Even if it means getting to work late.
Iâm about to run this by Lemon when my K-Pak beeps.
âItâs Abe,â I say, reading the name in the notification box now covering Lemonâs nose. âShould I answer?â
Lemon analyzes his paper work in progress. Taking this as permission to proceed, I tap the notification box. The K-Pak screen splits as the face of our fellow Capital T alliance member appears next to Lemonâs.
âHey,â Abe says.
âHi.â I smile. Abe and I arenât as close as Lemon and I are, but we still went through a lot together over the past year. Itâs nice to see him. âHowâs it going?â
âGreat! I mean, fine.â He tilts his chin toward where Lemon must be on his K-Pak screen. âFancy finger work, L-Dog.â
âHowâs your summer?â I ask before Abe can annoy Lemon.
âBusy,â he says. âBut I just wanted to check up onâI meanin withâyou guys. See what youâve been doing. If youâve been practicing anything we learned at school.â
âIâve been trying a few things,â I say, intentionally vague. Abeâs ultra competitive and is always trying to be the best Troublemaker in our class, so not knowing exactly what Iâve been doing will bother himâand entertain me.
His eyes narrow, but he doesnât press. âLemon? Set any mailboxes on fire lately?
Lemonâs hands freeze. Itâs a reasonable question, but he obviously doesnât like it. Fortunately, my K-Pak beeps again.
âGabby,â I say as her name pops up on the screen. âShould I answer?â
âNo,â Abe says.
âYes,â Lemon says.
I tap the box. Lemonâs and Abeâs faces shrink as the K-Pak screen divides into thirds and Capital Tâs fourth member appears.
âOh my goodness!â Gabby squeals. âYou guys ! There you are ! Iâve missed you so much! How are you? Tell me everything!â
âDid you just kiss your K-Pak camera?â Abe asks.
She did. At least thatâs what it looked like when her face gotreally big, disappeared behind a shiny pink mouth, and reappeared again after she rubbed lip-gloss film from the camera lens.
But Gabby doesnât confirm this. Instead, her blue eyes widen until they seem to take up half her head. They aim at Abe, who looks away to avoid becoming trapped in her powerful death stare.
âWeâre good,â I offer. âHow about you?â
Gabbyâs eyes return to their normal size. âGreat! Especially now that we can talk to and see each other, like, all the time!â
A loud knock comes through the K-Pak speaker.
âBusy!â Abe calls out.
Abeâs bedroom door opens. A manâI assume his dadâappears behind him.
âEven for a little sports action before work?â Mr. Hansen holds up both hands. A football is in one, a baseball in the other.
âYes,â Abe says.
âBut you can pick the sport!â Mr. Hansen exclaims.
âThen I pick none,â Abe says.
âOh, come on! A little friendly competition is great forââ
Mr. Hansen stops when Abe swivels around in his chair. I can only see the back of his head so donât know what kind of lookhe gives his dad, but it must be pretty serious. Because his dad frowns and leaves the room without another word.
Abe swivels backs. âSo. Gabby. Have you been making trouble?â
Gabby pauses, and I know she wants
