complied.
Although quiet music issued from the speakers, it wasnât enough to mask the harsh whispers coming from EM and her assistant.
Well, at least they arenât shouting
, Tricia thought, and sipped her wine.
Ginny, who was sitting directly behind EM, could obviously hear every word. She leaned forward. âIf she doesnât shut up, someone is going to murder her. And it might just be me!â
Tricia caught sight of a woman across the aisle, whoâd obviously heard Ginny. She nodded in that direction, and Ginny glanced that way. Caught, she smiled sweetly and then quickly looked away.
Cristophano returned. âAre you ready to order?â he asked.
âExtremely ready,â Ginny grated.
Cristophano wrote down their dinner preferences, retrieved the menu folders, and then turned away.
âWhy did you pick the diet dinner?â Angelica asked Tricia.
âDiet?â
âYes, the spa offering is the diet meal. Didnât you see the calories and fat grams listed?â
Tricia shrugged. âLamb just appealed to me tonight.â
Angelica shook her head. âIf I can reintroduce a topic,â she began. âWhatâs everybody going to do first thing in the morning?â
âI want to check out the library. I heard theyâve got something like six thousand books available for checkout,â Tricia said. âAlthough Ihave a feeling itâll concentrate on bestsellersâand probably heavier on those from the U.K. and Europe.â
âIt would have been nice if we could have boarded earlier and done a walk-through of the ship,â Angelica agreed. âBut weâve got two days at sea before we reach Bermuda.â
âI was hoping to do a little poolside reading,â Ginny said, âbut it wonât be warm enough until we get farther south. Iâm going to check out the Daily Program tonight and then make my decision. Besides lectures, there are supposed to be some author signings, as well as a number of interesting panel discussions. Just being away from the pressures of the job will be nice.â
âBut I thought you enjoyed your work,â Angelica said, sounding genuinely concerned. After all, Ginny worked for herâat least in her Nigela Ricita capacity.
âI
do
love it,â she insisted. âBut working with a babyâeven with spectacular day careâis a lot harder than I thought it would be.â
âWell, youâre doing a very good job,â Angelica said, which made Antonio beam as well.
Their dinners arrived and everyone dug in. The food was superb, and they were engrossed in their entrées when the dinner plates arrived at EMâs table. Tricia tried not to look like she was taking an interest, but after the drama theyâd already witnessed, she found it hard to take her eyes off the back of EMâs head. She watched as the woman took her first biteâand then spit it out on her plate.
âYou call this lobster? It tastes like sashimiâand cheap sashimi, at that!â EM declared.
âYouâre making yet another scene,â the woman across from her grated.
âWaiter!â EM called. A chagrined female server returned to stand before the tactless author. âTake this away.â
âIâm so sorry youâre displeased. What may I bring you?â
âBring me a bowl of soupâand some bread. You canât screw up bread, can you?â
âNo, madam.â The server quickly removed the plate and hurried away from the table.
The woman across from EM took a bite of her dinner. âI told you to get the beef. Mine is excellent.â
âYou have an unsophisticated palate.
Iâm
the gourmand here.â
As though in defiance, the woman shoveled an enormous forkful into her mouth and chewed.
A nervous Cristophano showed up at the table. âIs everything to your liking? May I get you anything?â
âI donât know about the
