tennis courts and soon they were at the pool. This was also raised and had an infinity look at one end.
“I love the whole idea of feeling like you could continue walking from the pool and step right into the ocean.”
“It is pretty cool. Sometimes I come down late at night when most of the guests have gone to bed. Floating away from the lights, I feel like I’m the only one here. I could drift out to sea and no one would notice.” He laughed self-consciously. “Not in a bad way, you understand?”
Megan was looking at him in a way he couldn’t interpret, and perhaps because he’d sounded like a complete idiot, she changed the subject.
“The place is amazing. I had no idea it looked like this. I knew it would be posh, but it’s so modern, and yet it doesn’t detract from the beauty of its surroundings.”
“I’m glad you think so. I tried hard to find that balance, which is why we have so many native plants and trees. Many of them have been transplanted but not all.”
“I love that you’ve got so many pohutukawas along the beach.”
He laughed. “I didn’t have too much choice. The council are strict with that sort of thing, but I would have kept most of them anyway. Aren’t they called the New Zealand Christmas tree?”
She looked surprised. “They are, due to the vibrant red flowers that bloom in summer – our Christmas.”
“Now, that was strange. Having a hot Christmas. Chelsea and I thought it was so weird, but it didn’t take long for us to appreciate it.”
    “Chelsea seems great.”
“Bringing her with me from New York was one of the best ideas I’ve ever had. She knows how to look after the guests and she can handle the mess bookings can turn out to be, so cleverly, with little disruption, that I had to have her. And now that I have you, things should really improve.”
“You’ve been having some issues, I gather?”
“Mainly with the staff, but that of course snowballs onto the guests. The last head housekeeper was helping herself to whatever cleaning products she could get away with, plus she couldn’t organize the cleaning team to save her life. Like Chelsea said, it was a nightmare, and she or I would be continually apologizing for rooms not cleaned or left without towels or whatever. I hate that sort of thing. People who want to stay at the Haven are used to being looked after, and looked after well.”
“I looked at your prices on-line and I can believe it. I bet you don’t get any locals staying here.”
“No, it doesn’t seem so. It’s a shame, but the resort may be too expensive for them.”
She gave him a look as if that was pretty obvious, then followed him as they continued to walk around the resort, checking out the chalets nearer the beach and those close to the amenities.
“How many staff would I be looking after?”
“We have ten Monday to Friday and twelve on the weekends. That’s when we’re full to capacity.”
“I can’t work weekends,” she said bluntly.
“I realize that, but you’d need to do the rosters for all seven days, and make sure we have enough supplies for the staff to do their jobs, including the laundry staff.”
“I read that in the contract, but I just wanted to make sure that you understand my limitations, since you and Chelsea seem to be workaholics.”
Jordan laughed, and couldn’t argue the truth of her statement. “Fair enough. Not that it’s any of my business, but what will you do with Cody and Mia when you’re at work?”
“I finalized that yesterday afternoon. I’ll start work after I drop them off at school. There’s a program already in place at the school for breakfasts and pre-school care as well as after-school care.”
He knew how much her girls meant to her, and leaving them in someone else’s care too long each day was not going to make her happy. Since he’d seen the little family in action he had a new found respect for what her life must be like.
“I really do need you here in the
