could only imagine how disappointed Vivica had been.
She seems to be taking it pretty well now, though,
Leona thought, studying her.
âSo, um, this practicing youâre doingâ¦when will it be over?â Vivica asked. âIâm wondering because my band needs the practice room today, too.â
âYour what?â Leona gasped.
âMy band. What?â Vivicaâs sky-blue lashes fluttered innocently. The ice-blue eyes behind them were less naive. âYou think youâre the only Starling who can start one? I asked Professor Langtree if the Ranker could rank a second band from the auditions, and she said, âSure, why not?ââ Vivicaâs thin blue-lipped smile spread like a stain across her face until it almost reached her ears. âI decided to call it Vivica and the Visionaries. Iâm the lead singer, of course, so it makes sense.â
Leona didnât turn to see the rest of the bandâs reaction to this. Her own shock and rage were too strong. âVivica? And the Visionaries?â
âItâs a little more catchy than Star Darlings, donât you think?â
No.
What Leona thought was that it was startlingly similar to the name sheâd planned to give her own band before the Ranker had named them: Leona and the Luminaries. Sheâd even started a fan page for them on StarBook before she knew it wouldnât be used. Sheâd still had hope the band could change names at some point, but how could they now, when Vivicaâs bandâs name was almost the same?
She probably saw the page!
Leona thought suddenly.
She probably picked that name out of blue-hearted spite!
âAnyway,â
said Vivica, still smiling. âYou know, right, that you can only have the rehearsal room for a starhour, max?â
Leona didnât.
âI knew that,â Vega said.
âAnd since it sounds like you can use all the practice time you can get, I guess weâll just come back in a starhour, then.â
And with that Vivica turned, her long pale blue hair swinging behind her back. Leona closed the door with a swipe of her arm, leaving sparks where her hand sliced the air.
âStarf!â
said Vega. âTwo bands. After all these years with none.â
â
Grrr!
Can we just play some music,â Leona roared, grabbing the mic, âand not talk about other bands!â
Vega gave her bass a halfhearted twirl and started to pluck it, then looked around. âWhoâs going to count us in?â she asked.
âOh, for heavenâs sake,â Leona huffed, âI will. Weâll do âHeart of a Glionââon three. A-one, a-twoâ¦â She clapped, once, then twiceâ¦.
On âthree,â they began.
âStop!â Leona yelled, half a verse in. âI canât sing to this. Youâre all over the place!â
âWe need a backbeat,â Sage said, sighing.
âMaybe we should call Clover,â Vega said.
âWhy?â Leona snapped. âSo she can write us a new song that doesnât need a beat?â
Clover had been writing songs for staryears and had immediately offered to share them with Leonaâs brand-new band. Sheâd even volunteered to be their manager. Anything, really, she was happy to do, except join them on the stage. Even though she had grown up in a huge family of famous circus performers and was very comfortable onstage, she now wished to stay as far from the starlight as possible.
âWe need a drummer! Now!â Leona roared. âOr waitâ¦whereâs my Star-Zap? Maybe it can play a beat for us? It doesnât quite have the same âstage presence,â but at least it wonât sit there sulking like Scarlet,â she muttered. âOr get all galactical at the littlest critiqueâ¦â
âClover plays the drums,â said Vega.
Sage knit her lilac eyebrows, confused. âI thought she played the guitar.â
âCorrect,â
