publicly forgive you and ask the church to accept you back in,â recalled Kina. âHe didnât have to do that. I think it shows just how much Charles loves you and wants to make the marriage work.â
âI donât know,â began Lawson. âI donât think marriage ought to be looked upon as work. Itâs supposed to be a blessing. I mean, look at Garrett and me. Iâm the happiest Iâve ever been in my life.â
âThatâs because youâve only been married six months,â replied Sullivan. âLetâs have this conversation five years from now when youâre studying episodes of CSI to see how you can kill him in his sleep and get away with it.â
Lawson shook her head. âWhen youâre married to the one God intended you to be with, you donât have those kinds of thoughts; at least I wonât.â
Sullivan rolled her eyes. âNot to sprinkle any rain on your delusional parade, Sister Banks, but I believe the Bible says, âDonât boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.â No marriage is written in heaven, not even yours.â
Lawson was undeterred. âSullivan, when Garrett and I took those vows, we meant them. Divorce and failure just simply arenât an option.â
â Humph! â Sullivan laughed a little. âIgnorance is bliss.â
âI canât attest to ignorance, but my marriage sure is,â boasted Lawson. âI thank God for Garrett every chance I get.â
Angel agreed. âThank Him, girl, because you know there was a time when we werenât so sure we were gonna be able to get the two of you down that aisle!â
âThanks to your big-mouthed sister over here,â mumbled Sullivan.
âItâs not Reggieâs fault,â protested Lawson. âAll she did was tell Mark the truth. I shouldâve told Mark we had a teenage son together after we first reconnected, and I definitely shouldnât have let him come between Garrett and me. All thatâs in the past now. Mark and Namon are closer than ever, and Garrett and Mark are getting along now that Mark has stopped obsessing over me. Allâs well that ends well.â
âNow that Markâs stopped obsessing?â echoed Reginell. âI believe the âobsessingâ was mutual, dear sister.â
Lawson bristled at the notion. âMy obsession with Mark ended right around the time I was in the delivery room screaming at the top of my lungs while Namon clawed his way out of my sixteen-year-old uterus. Anyway, I married Garrett, didnât I? His proposal is the one I accepted, not Markâs.â
âCan you all believe what a crazy year and a half itâs been?â asked Kina, thinking back on everything theyâd been through. âBetween Kenny killing EâBell, Sullivan getting outted on the Internet, Angel reuniting with Duke, and Lawsonâs battle with Mark over Namon, itâs a wonder weâve made it through in one piece!â
âItâs no wonder, Kina. The Lord brought us through, pure and simple,â attested Lawson. âThereâs no way we couldâve survived all that without Him.â
âTell it, girl,â affirmed Angel.
âBut you know what?â Lawson went on. âIâm grateful for the trials and everything weâve gone through. Itâs made us all stronger in our walk with the Lord, in our friendship, and made us stronger as women. 1 Peter 1:7 says, âThese have come so that the proven genuineness of your faithâof greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fireâmay result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.â So I praise him, yâall! I have a level of faith and endurance that Iâve never had before and that I donât think I would have if I wasnât forced to lean on God to get me through. We need to count it all joy,
