didn’t have a good time in art class?” Sarah asked, walking towards me.
Something in me snapped. “It was that fucking eye shadow you gave me! What’s in this stuff? It’s evil! I want it gone!”
    â€œAll right,” Sarah said.
She made a curious motion with her index and little finger. And I saw that the eye shadow disappeared from my lids. I reeled around.
â€œStay away! You’re too weird!” I stammered, trying to get past her and out the door. “Janine’s probably right about you!”
â€œThat what—that I’m trash?” Sarah said. “From the backwoods? That’s what everyone says about me, isn’t it?”
She was standing right next to me. Our hips touched slightly. Sarah raised a hand and ran a gentle finger down my face.
â€œThe truth is we sort of do live in a trailer park,” Sarah said. “We are only here for a while and then we will have to move on. But you know why we’re here, don’t you?”
I shook my head, but I felt a strange rush. I gasped for breath.
â€œWe want you. We want you because you have sacred blood,” she said. “Do you understand the word sacred ? It’s something that you shouldn’t be wasting on Mike.”
I backed away from her. But I was now far away from the exit.
â€œWhat are you talking about?” I asked.
â€œWhy do you think I transferred to this school?” Sarah murmured. “We smelled your virginal essence a continent and century away. We came to help you through this passage so that you can realize your eternal female power.”
Sarah urged me into one of the stalls as we talked. I tried to get past her, but found myself swept along. I heard the click of the little lever as she flipped it over. We were locked together inside the stall.
â€œHere,” Sarah said, taking her hand and moving it down to the top of my skirt. “Let me show you what I mean.”
â€œBut people are going to come in here,” I protested.
Sarah shook her head. “I don’t think so,” she replied.
â€œDon’t you hear that?” I said. “Someone’s in here.”
I whipped my head around at the noise, but Sarah drew my face back to hers.
She pushed me against the wall until our lips were only an inch apart. Was Sarah going to kiss me? Janine had often extolled the virtues of messing around with other girls—had hinted, in fact, that she’d had one or two lesbian sessions herself. Tia claimed to have made out with another girl at camp when she was only fourteen. She bragged about it, and made sure all the boys in school knew about it. But the most I had ever done was dance with other girls and try to masturbate to a few girl-girl fantasies. But now I was growing hotter and more confused by the second.
Sarah merely talked and whispered into my mouth from a half an inch away, her breath warm, sweet, and dizzying.
â€œYou can have some guy from this school break your lovely hymen—and face the most ordinary of lives ahead of you. Look at your parents. Because that’s what you’ll become. Or,” she said, her voice growling seductively, “you can pass over a different threshold. If you come to my house you will spend the day in the greatest luxury you’ll ever experience. You and I will go to the mall together and shop. You’ll dine at our table on a feast you’ve never imagined. I will prepare you myself for the moment. I’ll bathe you in the milkiest waters and slip a white silk dress on your oiled and perfumed body.”
The words were like little bites and licks. I involuntarily opened my mouth, desperately wanting Sarah to kiss me.
But again, she only spoke. “And then you will be taken to the most special chamber in all the universe—”
â€œIt’s black and candlelit, isn’t it? And it’s down at the end of that corridor,” I whispered.
    â€œYes, I took
