out there, and I found you unconscious in the snow. It was the only option available.”
“Now I’m humiliated beyond words, you can go. I don’t need you anymore.”
“I ain’t leaving until the doctor arrives, whatever you think of me. You’ve had a nasty knock on your head, and he told me to stay with you until he arrives.”
    “How long will that be?”
“A couple of hours, the snow is pretty bad out there.”
After a while, he moved her onto the sofa, and she slid in and out of consciousness. Eventually she awoke to find he’d made her some hot chicken soup.
Eating was the last thing on her mind. “I’m not hungry.”
“You need to eat something warm. I know what’s best for you.”
“I see you’re not big on patience.”
He propped some pillows behind her head and made her more comfortable.
“Hmm.” She clamped her mouth shut, refusing to eat anything.
“Very well, then I’ll have to spoon feed you like a baby.”
    “You wouldn’t.”
    “Try me.”
He knelt at the side of the sofa and spooned some soup toward her. Glaring at him, she kept her mouth firmly shut.
“I see. So what’s with this ex-husband of yours? What happened between you two to make you come all the way from Minneapolis to Whitewaters?”
Some things were just too plain hard to talk about, so she just shook her head, not fooled into opening her mouth.
“Let’s see if we can do better.” An amused expression formed on his face as he looked at her. “So when did you get your belly button pierced?”
Surprise made her open her mouth, and he spooned the soup inside before she could speak.
    She swallowed. “Hey, that’s unfair.”
“I never said I’d play fair. Now one more.”
She shook her head. Her gaze noticing the lines around his mouth deepening as he stared intently at her. Irritated that he found this all so amusing, she let her eyes wander over him. He’d rolled up the sleeves on his brushed cotton shirt, exposing the dark, masculine hair on his forearms. He certainly looked manly, with his broad shoulders and dark tousled hair.
Her eyes flicked to his. He was staring at her mouth, waiting for her to open up and take some more of the soup. For some reason, she duly obliged. If this was a test of wills, she knew he would win hands down. To her, it looked like Brad Dawson always got what he wanted.
When his silver irises connected with hers, it was as if he’d caressed her very soul. Those eyes had seen every part of her body, right down to the teensiest of her toes. If she didn’t feel so shitty, she’d be as embarrassed as hell. Had he liked what he’d seen? From the way he was looking at her, she guessed he had.
“I suppose you always get what you want,” she said indignantly.
“Yes, but this time I’m not so sure.” His deep voice reverberated through her, sending tiny shivers up her spine. Bad as she felt, she knew he wasn’t just talking about the soup.
    “Oh?”
He studied her and opened his mouth. Then he turned and looked out of the window. “Doctor’s here.”
“Guess you’re off the hook.” She knew he was about to say something else.
He smiled at her. “Guess so.” He leaned forward and kissed her lips, and God damn it, she kissed him back. “I’ll let the doctor in on my way out.”

Chapter Four

Just over a week had passed, and Cassie felt much better. As she toweled her hair dry, she looked in the bathroom mirror. The bruise on her forehead was beginning to diminish. However, the concussion had given her two very unsightly black eyes. Though they, too, were now beginning to fade.
The doctor had told her she’d had a lucky escape, and that Brad’s quick thinking had undoubtedly saved her life. Indeed, he had pointed out to her how wet her clothes still were three hours after Brad had removed them. At the time, all she could think of were her ruined Dolce and Gabbana jeans and her expensive silk underwear. To top it all, he’d also seen her naked.
