restaurants are slated to open in the next year or so, including a microbrewery and Sullyâs South, a smaller version of his original honky-tonk bar that will showcase singer-songwriters.â
Reese shook his head. âI never would have guessed that this little town would grow so much in the time I was gone. Damn, that baseball stadium sure got things going. Pretty cool that Noah Falcon came back here.â
âYou got that right. According to your mom, Noah Falcon pretty much saved this town from going under. And now they have that new recording studio down by the river.â
âSo, go on about Drew the douche.â
âLetâs just say he likes to take credit where credit
isnât
due. He puts it out there that as mayor heâs responsible for a lot of the recent development. Not true. A guy named Mitch Monroe put this mall together. Whisperâs Edge, an old retirement community down along the river, is growing like wildfire, but thatâs because it was bought by Tristan McMillan, a lawyer from Cincinnati.â
âIsnât that the guy who bought the trailer park too? Mom was telling me some of this over dinner last night.â
âHe did. He and his mother are turning it into an affordable subdivision with starter homes. Her real estate office is on the corner. Maggieâs a nice lady. She found me the two-family Iâm renting down by the river. And get a load of this. Maggie is married to rocker Rick Ruleman. Heâs the one who built a recording studio not far from where Iâm living.â
âSeriously?â Reese shook his head. âThis little town woke its sleepy ass up big-time.â He grinned. âMaybe coming back here isnât going to be as boring as I thought.â
âBut none of the progress is due to Drew. Iâm just sayinâ. The dude isnât nearly as important as he thinks he is. So, what are you gonna do about it?â
âAbout what?â
âHim coming on to Gabby.â
âNot my business.â
âReese, let Gabby know youâre legit.â
âUncle Tony, Iâm not what sheâs lookinâ for.â
âYou just got here a couple days ago. You donât know that.â
Reese rolled his head to his shoulders, trying to get rid of the tension. âI represent where she came from, not where sheâs going. Besides, would ya take a look at me? Tats. A motorcycle. Long-ass hair. Iâm the opposite of Drew the dipshit.â
âThatâs a good thing.â
âLook, Gabby Goodwin will always think of me as the troublemaker from the trailer park.â
âThen change her mind.â
Reese shrugged.
âHey, donât be givinâ me that shrug. You used to do that shit when you first came to live with me, remember? Actinâ like you donât give a ratâs ass when you really do.â
âYou gonna bust my chops all day?â
âAnd all night if thatâs what it takes.â He reached over and gave Reeseâs shoulder a shove. âYou still got a thing for this girl?â
âYeah. I mean, I guess.â
âThen go after her. There isnât anybody better than you.â
âIâll second that,â said Reeseâs mother as she pushed through the double doors and breezed into the kitchen. âWow, something sure smells amazing. Tony, what is it?â
âIâve been tinkering with the sauce. Tessa, go over and give it a taste.â
Tessa dipped a spoon into big pot. âMmmm.â She nodded and licked her lips. âThatâs some good marinara.â She looked at Reese. âI hoped you saved me a cannoli.â
âOf course, Mom. I used the old family recipe from Sicily that Uncle Tony found.â
âExcellent. By the way, have you seen Gabby yet?â
âWhy does everybody care about me seeing Gabby Goodwin?â Reese flicked Uncle Tony a glance. âI delivered a pizza to
