medicine. She gave Fredrick the shot, then immediately picked him up to comfort him.
âShh. I know it hurt, but this will make you feel all better. I promise.â Sheturned to the nurse. âHeather, go ahead and get this medicine so little Fredrick can get home to his warm bed.â
âOkay, Dr. St. John.â
Meridan put Fredrickâs pajamas back on him and kissed him on the forehead. She looked in his eyes. âYour Uncle Keaton did the right thing bringing you here. Iâll have to tell you how worried he was about you when you get a little older. Now, letâs go show him youâre much better. Your uncle and your sister are very concerned about you.â
When Meridan walked out the door with Fredrick, Winston and Arnelle were coming around the corner with fearful expressions on their faces. She waved at them, smiling. âHeâs okay. Calm down, guys. Itâs only an ear infection.â
Arnelle grabbed her heart and, with tears in her eyes, took Fredrick into her arms. She could see the relief in Winstonâs eyes also as he seemed to slowly let out a breath. Arnelle planted kisses all over Fredrick, then said, âThank you, Meridan.â
âThatâs what Iâm here for, but the credit goes to Keaton. Heâs the one who noticed Fredrick had a high fever and brought him here.â
Winston patted Keaton on the shoulder. âThanks, Man! You just donât knowâ¦â
âYes, I do. These guys are my blood and I love them like theyâre my own.â Tears were flowing down Arnelleâs cheeks as she walked over and kissed Keaton. âThank you, little brother,â she said as she hugged him.
MaLeah was hugging Meridanâs leg and from nowhere shouted, âFreddie tee-teed in Uncie Keyâs face!â
Keaton lowered his face in embarrassment. âThank you for the reminder, Shorty.â
Everyone laughed together.
Winston said, âWell, I guess weâd better get this little guy home. Thanks again, Meridan, and donât work too hard. Goodnight.â
She blushed and folded her arms.
âGoodnight, guys, and donât forget to follow the directions on Fredrickâs medicine. Oh, by the way, you two, you look great. Whatâs the occasion?â
Arnelle smiled and proudly announced, âWinston won Man-of-the-Year tonight.â
Meridan smiled. âWell, congratulations, Winston!â
Keaton shook his hand and hugged him. âYeah, Man, congratulations. You deserve it.â
MaLeah jumped up and down and yelled, âYeah, Daddy!â
Winston scooped her up in his arms. âThanks, everyone. It was a great feeling. Now, weâd better get home and get these little people into bed. Keaton, are you coming?â
He turned away to look at Meridan before answering. âWhat time do you get off work? Iâd like to treat you to breakfast, lunch, or something for taking care of Fredrick.â
Meridan blushed. âItâs my job and Iâm so sorry, Keaton, but Iâm covering for someone tonight. I just came on and Iâm on duty until tomorrow afternoon.â
Winston and Arnelle smiled as they started walking out of the hospital, leaving them to their conversation.
MaLeah yelled, âWait, Daddy! Uncie Key!â
He smiled at Meridan. âExcuse me for a second. Duty calls.â
Keaton walked over and knelt down, giving MaLeah a hug and kiss.
âIâll see you in the morning, Shorty. Itâs way past your bedtime and you need to get some sleep. I love you, and thank you for helping me with Fredrick tonight.â
She hugged his neck and yelled, âK!â
Keaton watched as his sister and her family exited the hospital doors together. When he turned back around, Meridan was gone. Confused, he walked over to the nurseâs station.
âExcuse me. Which way did Dr. St. John go?â
The nurse smiled and handed him a note.
âThank you,â he said as
