time from her studies. Rhonda had long dreamed of the day of going to college to start studying marketing and business. Now that she was here, she could not afford to mess it all up and start failing her classes. This started to create some tension for the couple; David once loved the fact that Rhonda was so intelligent and had plans but once he had gotten to college he started to change and became somewhat resentful of Rhonda. It was as if Rhonda came to the campus a new person. For Rhonda, it was a great feeling because it was like a new start for her to remake herself from this character that people back in her hometown had her pegged out to be. Although David still held his own, even just as much as he did back in high school, to him it seemed to feel like a competition for Rhonda’s attention; he knew she was there for school first and foremost but he had gotten spoiled and used to being a top priority in Rhonda’s life. She, on the other hand, noticed something was different about David and assumed it was due to his father’s illness. Every time she tried to discuss it with him David would say he was fine and change the subject. Days and nights of hot, heavy sex sessions in his apartment began to decrease. It seemed David started to prefer them having time together at her small dorm room in the middle of the night—sometimes they may be alone if Rhonda’s roommate was at her own boyfriend’s room. It was somewhat a relief for Rhonda because she felt overwhelmed and pulled in every direction, but she also thought it was odd that he never seemed to want her coming over to his place. She was also starting to feel like David was becoming very predicable even in their lovemaking. She knew how it was going to begin and how it was going to end; David had been concerned and mad every effort to make sure Rhonda climaxed but that turned into him becoming more concerned about his ability to climax, whether she did or not. Rhonda never complained and she did her best to be a supportive girlfriend while David went through what she hoped would be a temporary rough time for them.
They made it through the second semester and the y both went home for the summer with Rhonda deciding to go back to school early the last part of the summer to work and prepare for the start of her second year. When Rhonda went home one last time before fall classes began, David announced that he was not going back to school and that he was going to start seminary studies so he could take over for his father as the pastor of the church.
“What?! I have never heard you say you were interested in becoming a preacher! Where is this coming from?” Rhonda asked damn near stunned as they sat on the bench at their park.
“My father needs me. He’s doing better but it’s too much work for him. I told him I would take over for him and keep his dream going. I have really become quite active with the church a gain since coming home so we made the announcement last Sunday.”
Rhonda could not believe what she was hearing. “And you’re now just telling me?”
“I didn’t know how to tell you without making you upset. I know I talked you into coming to the same college so I know it is pretty shitty for me to turn around and quit school and leave you there when you had other preferences.”
“You’re damn right, David! But that’s not my biggest concern right now because I’m cool with where I am —I’m proud to be a Laker. What I am wondering is what this means for us as a couple. Things have been tough as is with you staying away weekends but now you are moving back here.” Rhonda had become fed up with David’s lack of concern for her feelings and she was at a point where she was no longer afraid of things ending; she was ready to cut her losses and move on but she was not prepared for what was coming next.
“Well, I have thought about that and I need to be honest with you. I have gotten reacqua inted with someone at the church and I think
