horse shows. I made three hundred dollars last month at the big show at Myopia.â
âThree hundred?â Katani was impressed in spite of herself. Sheâd made only one hundred dollars total from Kgirl Enterprises so far. She was shocked someone her age could make that much money.
âIâm going to be selling these at Dover Saddlery as soon as I get enough of them painted,â Whitney informed her with a toss of her ponytail.
âReally?â Katani said coolly. She would love to have some of her things for sale at a classy shop like Dover Saddlery in Wellesley. It was one of the best riding apparel stores around. Katani moved to Penelopeâs back hoof to avoid Whitneyâs penetrating eyes. This so-together girl was making her nervous.
Whitney walked behind Penelope, pinning her hair back in place with the barrette. âSee, I do know a thing or two about being an entrepreneur.â
Katani could feel Whitneyâs eyes traveling up and down her. Prickles ran along Kataniâs back. Yikes! She realized that Whitney was as competitive as she was. Maybe she shouldnât have mentioned the contest to her.
âLike I said, Iâd be happy to help you,â Whitney continued. âI mean, if youâre doing scarves, we could put our products together and market them as riding accessories.â Katani had to admit that sounded like a great business idea, but she reallywanted to do this all by herself. Especially without help from some snobby girl who already had her own successful business. Besides, if she won, she wanted the award to be all hers.
âUhhâ¦no thanks, Whitney,â Katani finally spit out.
As she bent down to clean Penelopeâs last hoof, Katani sneaked a glance at Whitney. Did she actually look a little bitâ¦hurt? Katani suddenly felt guilty for blowing her off, but immediately a bright, fake smile filled Whitneyâs face.
âThatâs okay,â Whitney said quickly. âCan you just let me know where the ad was for the contest?â
Katani opened her mouth, but before she said anything, Kelley was standing beside Whitney, blurting, â T-Biz! , T-Biz! The âEntrepreneur of the Yearâ contest encourages young entrepreneurs to develop their expertise to successfully start and manage their own businesses. This is an opportunity for all young entrepreneurs to fulfill their dreams,â Kelley repeated the contest ad in a monotone voice.
Katani gripped on to Penelopeâs mane and slowly counted to ten. Kelleyâs incredible memory was about to make her scream.
âMr. Bear and I, two business leaders of the next generation,â Kelley went on.
Katani ignored Kelley and looked at Whitney, who seemed amused by all this.
âThanks, Kelley. And good luck in the contest.â Whitney smiled, showing her straight white teeth. âIâm sure you and Mr. Bear will do great.â
Very funny, Katani thought. Whitney was so totally condescending.
âSee you in two weeks.â Whitney spun around and walked away from them, her ponytail swishing across her back.
âI like her, I like her very much. And Mr. Bear likes her, and Wilburââ
âKelley,â Katani interrupted, and said as patiently as she could, âI should have told you the contest is a special pinkie-swear secret.â
Kelleyâs eyes widened. She loved pinkie-swear secrets.
âYou know what that means, right?â Katani asked.
Kelley nodded and sealed her lips with her finger. Then they hooked and unhooked their pinkies three times.
âNo one else can know now,â Katani warned her sister as she put her finger to her lips and pretended to throw away the key for emphasis.
Penelope stomped her hoof to the barn floor, reminding Katani to return her to her stall where food was waiting. As Katani led the horse back, Penelope nuzzled her shoulder. Katani whispered that sheâd see her in one week and six days
