want in?â
âI want out ,â she replied. âOf here.â
âOkay.â
âDoes this job pay anything?â she asked. âI mean, besides the cost of my funeral?â
âNot much,â said Pretorius. âBut before the mission starts I can get your entire record expunged.â
She laughed. âFat lot of good having a clean recordâll do when they bury us in . . . ?â
âSomewhere in Orion.â
âRight,â she said. âYou found anyone else with a death wish besides you and me?â
âFelix Ortega.â
âNever heard of him.â
âYouâll meet him soon enough.â
âMay I make a suggestion?â she asked.
âIâm listening.â
âGet Toni Levi to join us.â
âIâm way ahead of you,â said Pretorius. âIâm having dinner with her tonight.â
3C
Toni Levi, who hated her nose, her eye color, and the name Antoinette, sat across the table from Pretorius. Sheâd had two cosmetic surgeries, had spent countless hours in a local gym, and was on her third hair colorâand was still disappointed with her appearance, and the fact that most people didnât find her ugly but indeed quite ordinary did nothing to alter her opinion.
âThat was an excellent dinner, Nate,â she said as a robotic waiter took the empty plates from the table. âIâve always loved Belargian shellfish, and this is a great wine.â
âIâm glad you liked it.â
âAre you going to tell me why weâre here, or would you rather wait for dessert?â
âI may have a big job for you,â said Pretorius.
She laughed aloud. âOf course you do, Nate,â she said. âWhenâs the last time either of us worked on a little job?â
âPoint taken,â said Pretorius, pulling out the security cube and activating it. âIt wonât pay that well, itâll take three months out of your life, and the odds are that you wonât survive it.â
âYou really know how to charm a girl,â she said with a smile.
âIf itâll make you feel any better, the Snakeâs coming along.â
âSally Kowalski? I like her.â She paused. âI hate the nickname youâve given her, though.â
âShe gets into places even a snake canât penetrate.â
âItâs even worse than what you call me.â
âPandora?â said Pretorius. âBut it fits. There isnât a computer or lockbox or anything else that you canât open.â
She laughed. âSo far,â she replied. âBut I donât like it anyway.â
âIt fits,â he said, holding up the cube. âRemember this?â
âRemember it?â she replied. âHell, I created it.â
âAll the more reason for calling you Pandora. I canât give you a name in some code that only you and three computers in the whole galaxy can speak.â
âEven so.â
âSettle for it. Itâs better than Sexpot.â
âAnd those are the only two nicknames you know?â
He smiled. âThe only two that are left and that fit you.â
âIâm almost flattered,â she replied. âOkay, whatâs this mission that you thought was worth the most expensive dinner in town?â
âEven been to Orion?â
âNot many people haveâand even less have returned to tell about it.â
âArenât you even a little curious about it?â
âOf course I am,â she answered, âbut I think General Michkag might have a little something to say about it.â
âOh, I doubt it,â said Pretorius with a smile.
She studied his face for a moment. âOkay, what do you know that I donât know?â
âNot a hell of a lot, according to your resume.â
âCut the bullshit, Nate,â she said irritably. âWhat do you know about Michkag that I
