telling these ladies that theyâre lucky to have a man around the house. You know, to handle the heavy lifting and get things down from high shelves.â
âThatâs about all Iâm good for, all right. That and my sparklinâ wit and dashinâ good looks.â
âYes, thereâs that,â Phyllis said. âI notice that itâs almost time for Joye Jamesonâs show. You donât mind if we watch it, do you, Peggy?â
âHelp yourself. Thereâs a fifty-two-inch plasma TV in the den. Another of Lloydâs ideas. And the cable systemâs got every channel under the sun, including some that completely baffle me as to why anybody would ever watch them.â
Carolyn said, âI know exactly what you mean.â
The four of them moved to the den. Eve had gone up to her room to lie down after lunch, something that she did most days, and Phyllis didnât want to disturb her. Eve wasnât a particular fan of
The Joye of Cooking
, although she would watch it if she happened to be in the room. She was more interested in the other lifestyle features that Joye Jameson did, rather than the cooking.
After they had watched for a few minutes, Carolyn said, âThis episode is a rerun. I remember seeing it before. Sheâs going to cook tamales.â
âThat sounds good,â Peggy said. âProbably more complicated than I could ever manage, but I wouldnât mind watching.â
âOh, I wasnât saying we shouldnât watch. Thatâs fine with me.â
During the next commercial break, Peggy said, âSeems like I used to watch a show like this several years ago, but it didnât have this girl on it. I think the woman who did it was named Gloria or something like that.â
âExactly like that,â Carolyn said. âYouâre thinking of
Gloriaâs Kitchen.
The host was named Gloria Kimball.â
âYeah, thatâs her. Whatever happened to her?â
âShe retired from
Gloriaâs Kitchen
,â Phyllis said, âbut sheâs still on TV. Here in Dallas, in fact. She does cooking and lifestyle segments on
Good Morning 44
.â
âWhatâs that, the morning show on Channel 44?â Peggy said. âThat explains it. Iâm never up that early. Iâm not one of those people who get up with the sun. I like my sleep.â
âSheâs all right,â Carolyn said, âbut sheâs no Joye Jameson. I guess she just couldnât keep up with the pace of a successful network show anymore.â
The show went to a commercial again, and during that break there was an announcement that
The Joye of Cooking
would air live the next day from the pavilion of the State Fair of Texas.
âThatâs why theyâre showinâ a rerun today, Iâll bet,â Sam said. âTheyâre busy gettinâ all set up for tomorrow.â
âMore than likely,â Phyllis agreed.
Carolyn said, âWe should go to the fair tomorrow and watch. The cookie contest is the day after tomorrow, so Iâll be busy then.â
âI think thatâs a good idea,â Phyllis said. âThe funnel cake contest is the next day, too.â
âNot at the same time, I hope.â
Phyllis shook her head. She had checked the schedule for conflicts. âNo, the cookie judging is in the morning, and they wonât be doing the funnel cakes until that afternoon.â
âAnd the Spam cook-off is a couple of days after that,â Sam put in.
Phyllis frowned slightly in concern. âAre you going to be ready so soon?â she asked him.
âSure. Itâs just a matter of decidinâ which recipe Iâm gonna use. I hope you folks like Spam, because Iâm gonna need some guinea pigs between now and then.â
âJust what are you going to fix?â Carolyn asked with a wary look on her face.
âWell, I was thinkinâ about making Spam
