strap with your foot.â
âIâll try,â Sally said and strained forward with her right foot for the bag. Just another two inches and sheâd be able to reach it, but even arching her back and kicking out, the tip of her shoe justmissed the straps. After a couple of minutes of struggling she gave up and sighed. âI canât do it. What are we going to do now?â
âProbably rot for eternity,â Watch said.
âDonât say that,â Adam said. âWe have to maintain a positive attitude.â
âI donât know if a positive attitude helps when youâre in hell,â Sally mumbled.
âWeâre not in hell,â Adam said. âWeâre in a hell. Thatâs not exactly the same thing.â
Sally stared down the street at the other captured people. A few were moaning and a couple even had bird nests on top of their heads. Black ravens screeched in their dry hair. Sally sighed again.
âRight now I donât think it makes much difference,â she said.
âLook,â Adam said, trying to sound upbeat, âweâve been in difficult situations before and weâve always managed to find a way out. Weâll do the same this time. We just have to come up with a plan.â
âWeâre waiting,â Watch said.
âWell,â Adam said. âFirst we have to break out of these chains. Letâs concentrate on that.â
âI donât think the power of our concentration is going to break these chains,â Sally said.
âI canât believe you guys are ready to give up,â Adam complained.
Watch nodded down the block. âIt looks like a tall demon is coming. I hope itâs not one of those Gatekeepers the others mentioned. They didnât sound all that friendly.â
Watch was right. Another monster was approaching.

C indy was lying in the grass beside Madeline Templetonâs tombstone when the others reappeared. Because she was resting with her eyes closed, she heard them before she saw them. She was surprised because they had only been gone a few minutes. She sat up when she heard them talking and watched them as they stood huddled together in front of the tombstone.
âYou guys just left.â She was so relieved to see them again she broke into a huge grin. âDid you find Bryce?â
They paused and stared at one another as ifsurprised by her question. Then Adam said in a flat voice, âWe werenât looking for Bryce.â
Cindy got up slowly. âBut thatâs why you went on the Secret Path. Donât you remember, Sally?â
Sally broke into a smile at being addressed. She was looking around as if she had never seen the cemetery before. âWe didnât find him,â she said in a rather heavy voice. âBut it doesnât matter. We donât need him.â
Cindy was confused. âBut you were worried about him.â
âHeâs gone,â Watch said simply. âHeâs not a problem. Take us to town.â
âWhat did you see on the other side of the tombstone?â Cindy asked. âAnything exciting?â
For a moment their eyes brightened. Indeed, it was as if a faint red light shone in them. Cindy blinked her own eyes, thinking she must have imagined the glow.
âWould you like us to show you what we saw?â Sally asked.
Cindy shrugged. âYeah. If itâs safe.â
Adam turned to Sally. âWeâre not showing her anything right now. We have things to do here first. Later we will take her.â
âWhere will you take me?â Cindy asked.
Adam smiled strangely. âTo a nice place. We will take you there tonight.â
âI donât know if I can go out tonight,â Cindy said. âI think my mother wants me to stay in to watch my little brother.â
âWeâll take him with us as well,â Sally said, stepping forward. âEnough talk. We want to go to town. We have much to
