secure?â
âYour future at Global Sands will be both secure and bright. Above all we reward loyalty.â
âCan I think about it?â
Mr Buchanan turned and took a couple of steps towards the door. Holly saw him bite his lip in frustration before putting on a smile and turning around.
âOf course you can,â he said, âbut please remember I have spoken to you in confidence.â
âYes, I understand and I am grateful. I know how valuable your time is.â
âValuable and expensive,â replied Mr Buchanan, inspecting another mini fishcake before thinking better of it and placing it back on the tray.
âShould I call you?â asked Mr Bigsby.
âNo, Iâll call you tomorrow. Please, donât disappoint me, Malcolm.â
Holly shut her eye again as Mr Buchanan opened the door and both men passed her. She heard Mr Buchanan thank Big Hair for the delicious food and leave.
Dad and Big Hair came back into the room.
âWell? What did he say? Did he offer you a position?â she asked.
âYes.â
âThatâs excellent,â she squealed. âYouâve accepted, of course.â
âIâve said Iâll think about it.â
âWhatâs to think about? Oh, I see, you donât want toseem too keen; make it seem like youâve got other offers to consider. Very clever. Youâll accept it, of course. Donât leave it too long; I donât think Mr Buchanan is used to waiting for anything. Thatâs such good news. Now youâll have a decent income again we can get that new carpet.â
She picked up the tray of food and took it to the kitchen. Hollyâs dad followed her in.
Holly reappeared and ran upstairs to the phone on the landing. She picked up the receiver and dialled Dirkâs number.
Chapter Six
Dirk yanked the television plug out of the socket with his tail. The rock band stopped rocking, the banging from next door stopped banging, Mrs Klingerflim stopped shouting and Alba stopped screaming. He picked up the ringing phone.
âThe Dragon Detective Agency,â he said, catching his breath. âDirk Dilly speaking. How can I help you?â
âItâs me â¦â
It was Hollyâs voice, but he couldnât hear what she said next because Alba spoke over her, saying, âI have been telling you, already. I want you to help finding my sister.â
âIâm not speaking to you,â said Dirk to Alba, causingthe Sea Dragon to lower her head apologetically.
âWhat have I done?â said Holly, thinking he meant her.
âNot you,â replied Dirk.
âThen you will help me?â said Alba.
âDirk, I need your help,â said Holly.
âNo, I wonât help you,â replied Dirk, again speaking to Alba.
âWhy? Whatâs wrong?â said Holly.
âYou are very indecisive,â said Alba.
âLook, can I call you back?â he said into the phone, turning away from Alba.
âWhatâs going on?â asked Holly.
âWhy do you want to call me Back?â asked Alba. âMy name is Alba.â
âNothing. Iâll call you back,â said Dirk, hanging up.
âOK, I let you call me Back if you promise to help me,â said the Sea Dragon.
âHavenât you ever heard of a phone?â asked Dirk.
âAfone?â repeated Alba. âI have not heard of Afone. Is this another of your crunchy-shelled humano foodstuffs?â
âNever mind. You have to go,â said Dirk, picking up the broken TV and placing it back on the filingcabinet. âYouâve caused enough damage for one day.â
âBut I will not go without you,â she replied. âI need your help. I need the help of the great Mr Dirk Dilly, dragon detective.â
âHow do you know about me anyway?â asked Dirk, turning on her. âHow do you know where I live?â
âThe Shade-Hugger said not to say â¦
