tells me heâs drowned in the river and you tell me this.â
âIâm sorry.â
Taylor dropped his cigarette and stepped on it. âSheriff told me I could pick up Grampâs things tomorrow. Did my grandfather talk to you about something that was bothering him?â
âHe didnât mention anything.â
âAre you sure?â
âLast time I saw him was a couple of weeks ago and he didnât say anything out of the ordinary.â Lewis remembered that visit. He and Martin were sitting out in the yard looking at a full moon. Coyotes were howling in the canyon and they laughed as Martinâs dog Rojo tried to bay with them.
âWell,â Taylor said, âIâm staying at the Best Western in town. If you think of anythingââ
âIâll call.â
Chapter Six
Maggie and Laura met Lewis at the front door. Maggie waved a quarter in his face, said, âWhat is this? Have you ever seen one of these?â
âWhat are you raving about?â Lewis asked.
âThis is a quarter, Lewis.â
Lewis sat down on the sofa, kicked off his shoes.
âYou drop one of these into a pay phone and dial and you can tell the people who are sick with worry that youâre okay and not dead in some ditch.â
âIâm sorry.â
Laura sat beside him.
âI just got off the phone with the sheriff.â
Lewis looked at her.
âI was calling to tell him you were overdue, but he told us youâd been there.â
âSo, whatâs the fuss.â
Maggie cleared her throat. âIâll make tea.â
When the woman was out of the room, Laura said, âMaggieâs mad.â
âYeah, well, she has a right to be. Iâm sorry I worried you.â He looked at the kitchen door. âMaggie?â
âWhat?â
âDid Mondragon say anything to you about Martin?â
âNo.â
Lewis got up and walked to the phone on the wall just inside the kitchen. He asked the operator to dial the sheriff. âMay I speak to Sheriff Mondragon, please? Yes, itâs important. Manny?â
âYeah?â said Mondragon.
âItâs me, Lewis Mason. Want to tell me whatâs going on?â
âI told you everything, professor. Aguilera died in the river while fishing.â
âAnd thatâs all you have to say to me?â
âThatâs what my report says.â
Lewis let the receiver down in its cradle. He looked up to find Maggie and Laura staring at him from the kitchen table.
âMartin drowned in the river.â
Maggie frowned. âBut you saidââ
âI know what I said. Donât ask me to explain anything. The sheriff is writing in his report that Martin Aguilera drowned while fishing in the rapid water of the Rio Grande. I donât think my name appears.â
âRelax,â Maggie said.
âSomething really strange is going on. Martinâs grandson showed up.â
âAlready?â
Lewis sat down at the table. âClaims he got a letter from the old man saying something was wrong. Taylorâs his name. Says his mother married a white man and got Martin mad. If heâs got Mexican blood, I do.â
âWhy is the sheriff acting funny?â Maggie asked.
Lewis shrugged. âI thought he didnât want to say anything in front of Taylor. But now I donât know. Maybe heâs scared of something. âHe picked up his mug and sipped the hot tea. âHave you met the new vet?â
Maggie shook her head.
âCyril Peabody. A nice guy.â
âWhereâd you run into him?â
Lewis decided not to mention the squirrel. âIn town.â He looked out the window at the afternoon. âSo, how did you two get along today?â
âGreat,â said Maggie.
âNo fighting or anything like that?â
Laura laughed. âNo,â she said. âWe played cards and went for a walk. We saw a
