That rat Taffy Sinclair was trying to trick me into giving myself away.
"No!" I said. Then I narrowed my eyes and gave her the worst poison-dart look that I could. "I don't spend nearly as much time in the girls' bathroom COMBING MY HAIR as you do."
I spun around, turning my back on her, and headed for my desk. My friends were all grinning and giving me the thumbs-up sign for victory, but I had a terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. Taffy Sinclair really had it out for me. She had just made that perfectly clear. Even the 1,000-watt smile that Randy gave me didn't make things better.
When the bell rang, Wiggins did all the normal things. She took roll and made announcements as if nothing in the world were wrong. Maybe she wasn't going to say anything else about her wallet, after all. Of course, I was wrong.
"Class, before we begin our math lesson for this morning, I want to talk to you again about the stolen wallet."
She paused, and I felt a shiver travel all the way up my backbone.
"I have it back, minus the money, of course. The custodian found it after school yesterday in the girls' bathroom. But that does not end the problem. As I said yesterday, it is important for the person responsible to speak with me privately as soon as possible. You may see me after school, or you may call me at home. But please do come forward so that I can avoid calling the authorities."
Even though I was innocent, I had never felt so guilty in my life. Wiggins was still talking about calling the police. What would it be like to be locked up in a tiny cell? Would Mom get to come and see me whenever she wanted to? My hands were shaking as I opened my math book. Probably everyone sitting around me had noticed. How could I possibly get through the whole day?
Just then I saw something on the corner of my desk. It was a note folded about a million times until it was the size of a penny. I had been so busy worrying about going to jail that I hadn't seen anyone put it on my desk.
I glanced at Wiggins. She goes berserk when kids pass notes. Fortunately, she was looking the other way. I opened it quickly before she looked in my direction and spread it out on my lap. It was from Taffy Sinclair. It looked as if my worst nightmare might really come true.
    Jana ,
Meet me by the swings at morning recess. This is important. BE THERE!
    Taffy Sinclair

CHAPTER FIVE
T affy was standing beside the swings when I got outside. She is always the first one out at recess because she sits so close to the door. The distance to the swings from the school door seemed like miles, and I felt like a condemned person walking to my execution as I headed toward her.
"What do you want?" I growled as soon as I was close enough for her to hear me.
Taffy smiled. "Just some favors in exchange for keeping quiet about what I know."
"You don't know anything!" I was having a hard time keeping my voice down so that no one else would hear. I was so mad at her that I wanted to die. "I told you what really happened."
"If you're so innocent, then why don't you tell Wiggins?" Taffy paused and gazed off into the distance as if she were seeing a picture in her mind. "She said that if the guilty person didn't come forward, she would have to call the police. Just think what it would be like if the police came to our classroom and began questioning every body and searching our desks. W hen they questioned me, I would have to decide whether to tell them or not."
Taffy was obviously enjoying watching me squirm, and I was determined not to let her get the best of me. "I SAID—what do you want?"
"Wiggins gave us a whole page of math problems for homework. I really don't like to do homework, so, since you have to do yours anyway, you can do mine for me. It would be really friendly of you, and I would NEVER tell on a friend."
"I can WHAT?" This time I didn't even try to keep my voice down.
"You heard me," she said, giving me a sinister look.
    "And if I don't?"
    "Guess. Of course, if
