flavorsâ¦Herbieâs ukuleleâ¦â Kylie jotted down a list. âAre we leaving anything out?â
âHello? The big 3â0!â Lexi reminded her. âItâs a thirtieth birthday party. How do we represent that?â
âWe could use thirty ingredients in each cupcake!â Delaney piped up.
âAnd we could be up all night baking!â Jenna corrected her. âThatâs a whole lotta ingredients to pack in one tiny cupcake.â
âWhat about arranging the cupcakes so they form the numbers three and zero?â Sadie said. âIâm no math genius, but I think thatâs a simple solution.â
âSadie scores again!â Lexi patted her friend on the back. âThatâs perfect. We could build a wooden sandbox, fill it with our cookie crumb sand, and arrange the cupcakes to form a thirty in it.â
âThen itâs a plan,â Kylie said, shutting the cover to her Peace, Love, and Cupcakes club binder. âAnd a pretty cool one at that!â
Jenna insisted the girls meet extra-early Saturday at Kylieâs to try on their Hawaiian costumes.
âThis is yours,â she said, handing a light-pink floral crop top to Lexi. Each top had a matching grass skirt. âAnd thisâ¦â she announced, pulling a baby-blue shirt with dolphins on it and an extra-long skirt out of a bag, âis yours, Sadie.â
âWhat about me?â Delaney asked, trying to sneak a peek in the other bag Jenna had brought with her.
â Paciencia! â Jenna said, playfully slapping Delaneyâs hand. She handed Kylie a bright-green top with palm trees on it and donned her own royal-blue shirt, dotted with the Hawaiian Islands.
âLast but not least,â she said, pulling a bright-red halter top covered in sequined flowers out of her bag, âthis is for Delaney!â
âWhoa!â Delaney said, holding it up for size. âThis is so me!â
âThat is so loud!â Lexi gasped, shielding her eyes. Even the grass skirt was made of red metallic fringe instead of the ordinary green.
âLike I said, itâs so me!â Delaney squealed with delight. She threw her arms around Jenna. âThank you, thank you!â
Jenna squirmed. â De nada! I thought youâd go loco for it.â
âAre we ready to head out?â Herbie asked, inviting himself in to gather the girls and the cupcakes. âIâve got my ukulele all tuned up.â
âIn a sec,â Sadie said, placing her crutches under her arms. She watched as her friends each took a box of cupcakes. She felt useless.
âItâs okay, Sadie.â Kylie read her mind. âWe got it.â
âI know. I just wish I could pitch in more. Iâm not used to being on the bench.â
When they arrived at the party, the birthday girlâs bestie, Bernadette, was in the party room shushing everyone and instructing them to duck under tables and behind chairs. The girls found a large table in the center of the room and arranged the cupcakes in the sandbox to form the numbers three and zero.
âOh, these are amazingâand you guys even dressed the part!â Bernadette exclaimed.
âI choreographed an authentic Hawaiian hula for us to do for the birthday girl,â Delaney bragged.
âWow, thatâs what I call a special delivery,â Bernadette replied. âMelanie will love it.â
âMelanie will be here any minute,â a guest said, waving her watch in Bernadetteâs face.
Bernadette flew into action. âOh my gosh! Shut off the light! Hide! We donât want to ruin the surprise!â
The PLC girls did as they were told, scooting behind the long red velvet curtains in the party room. The room was now pitch-dark.
âI love a surprise!â Delaney said, barely able to contain her excitement.
âHere she comes!â another one of the friends whispered. âEverybody, on the count of three,
