brother’s death. She liked that he was such a loving, ambitious and determined guy—just the sort of guy she’d always wanted but never seemed to be able to get. Solange also knew Hunter would love selflessly just from the way he had talked about his mother and late brother.
“Solange, are you even listening to me?” Ashley said when Solange didn’t reply to her previous query. “Are you having man problems?”
“Problems? What would make you think I’m having man problems after what I’ve just been through? You’ve got to be crazy.” Solange said, trying to avoid the topic, although she knew Ashley too well to know that she would not rest until Solange told her what was on her mind.
“Listen, if Jerome is the one making you so absentminded, then maybe you still have feelings for that studly dud,” Ashley said with a glimmer in her eye.
“Don’t mention that jerk’s name ever again. I broke things off with him for good reasons as you well know,” Solange said, her voice filled with venom as she thought of the boyfriend that had not gone a day without emotionally and physically abusing her when they’d been together.
“Are you sure you haven’t found another man that suits your fancy?” Ashley said as she watched Solange finish getting dressed. They were preparing to head off to one of the stadium where the games were being held.
“Not quite, but there’s this guy I met on the plane, hot, dark haired and with a super sexy swimmer’s body,” she said softly. She squeezed her thighs together as she, remembered the huge erection he’d had when she woke up in his arms. His equipment was a bonus, but he was really sweet to help her get over her airplane jitters. “I think I really like him.”
“It is about time that you got yourself someone new. I always wondered why you ever hooked up with Jerome in the first place. He was no good for you,” Ashley said, patting her back. “So, when do I get to meet him?”
“Ashley, it’s not that I actually know him, we just talked on the plane, and later on I fell asleep against his shoulder,” Solange lied.
“So why not go look for him? The Olympic Village can't be that large, sweetie. Come on, hurry up or else we will miss the bus,” Ashley said, grabbing Solange's hand impatiently.
“I think I know where he is. But, you know Jerome. He’s going to cause a scene if he believes I’ve moved on with another man so soon after dumping him,” Solange said. This was part of the reason she was skulking around The Village with Hunter late at night. To avoid running into Jerome. “The athletics managers were thankfully in the front of the plane. I’m so glad he didn’t see Hunter and me together because I can't imagine the embarrassing confrontation that would have caused.”
Solange and Ashley were both team trainers for the track and field teams at LSU, and they traveled with the athletes to all their competitions. Having just turned twenty-three, Solange had dreamed of becoming a sports doctor, but allowed her heart to rule her head when Jerome Walters, one of the athletic directors, talked her into passing on the University of Chicago Medical School to stay close to him in Baton Rouge when his career took off. So she’d put her dream on hold for a man. How stupid had she been?
She had allowed herself to be seduced while on the job by an older man, and she had foolishly fallen for him at the time, only for her to realize a year later that he was an alcoholic and a serial abuser. When she’d made her second colossal mistake of moving in with him six months later, his true colors came to life. He would come home drunk and look for reasons that did not exist to beat her up. She had reported to the police several times, but he bribed them and they never followed up. Finally, she had given up and broken it off with him, but he had vowed that she would never be with another man for as long as he was alive. He would kill any man who came near her.
