âAnybody see anything? I donât want to miss one.â
After a couple of minutes, Karen screamed, âI saw one!â
âWhere?!â Mutt, Stripes, and Poo-Poo shouted in unison.
âI just got a glimpse of it!â Karen said. âBehind that big cloud. Where the moon was a minute ago!â
This comment caught Stick Dogâs attention. He asked Karen, âThe moon isnât where it was a minute ago?â
âNo. Now thereâs just a big cloud there,â Karen answered. âThe cloud the balloon is behind.â
âWhat color was the balloon?â asked Stick Dog.
âKind of grayish-yellowish-whitish,â Karen answered. âAnd really bright. Like it was glowing or something.â
âDid it have stripes?â asked Stripes.
âNot that I remember, Iâm sorry to say,â said Karen. âIt had, like, faded irregular-shaped spots or something, I think. Remember, I only got a quick glimpse.â
âMaybe it has stripes on the other side,â offered Mutt.
This idea lifted Stripesâs spirits considerably.
Mutt, Karen, Stripes, and Poo-Poo stared at that cloud and waited for the hot-air balloon to emerge.
And waited.
Then it happened.
The edge of a circle appeared as the cloud slowly slid aside. It was just as Karen had described: grayish-yellowish-whitish, bright, and marked with faded, irregular spots of several sizes.
Stick Dog watched and listened.
âKaren!â yelped Poo-Poo.
âWhat?â
âThatâs not a balloon!â he exclaimed.
âWhat is it then?â
Mutt, Poo-Poo, and Stripes all screamed the answer at the same time.
âItâs the MOON!â
Then they all started laughing.
Karen shook her head and stuck her chest out in defiance. She said, âMaybe itâs a hot-air balloon thatâs shaped like the moon.â
Stick Dog decided to step in then.
âItâs the moon, Karen,â he said definitively but kindly. âItâs an honest mistake.â
Karen hung her head. âThatâs really embarrassing.â
âYou know what might make you feel better?â asked Stick Dog.
âWhat?â
âIf you shared your plan with us.â
âWhat plan?â Karen asked. She was still quite dejected. Her head hung low; her tail didnât wag at all. It just drooped.
âYour plan to get to the top of the hill.â
âOh, right,â she said, and lifted her head. She seemed suddenly happier. âItâs a pretty nifty plan! And totally feasible. I know it will work easily.â
âBefore you tell us,â Stick Dog suggested, âletâs move away from this place. That darn moon is taunting us. It just looks so much like a balloon. Why donât we get out of here?â
âIâm with you,â Karen said gladlyâand then took a brief second to scowl at the moon high in the sky.
âWhat about my plan?â asked Mutt. âWhat about searching for a hot-air balloon? Thereâs bound to be one soon.â
âWeâll keep an eye out,â Stick Dog said quickly. âDonât worry. As soon as we see one, weâll put your plan into action.â
âSounds good.â
âWhere are we going, Stick Dog?â asked Poo-Poo.
âLetâs just move to that next little flat area,â Stick Dog said casually. He nodded his head toward another plateau farther up the hill. And before anyone could question his motives, he started walking toward the new spot.
Without thinking about it, Mutt, Stripes, Poo-Poo, and Karen followed after him.
CHAPTER 6
A GIANT SKILLET
âThis looks like a good spot,â Stick Dog said, and settled into a comfortable listening position. He casually glanced up the hill to see how far from the top they were.
They were pretty close.
After the others got comfortable, Karen provided the details of her own plan.
âOkay,â she said, and paced slowly
