Warwick commanded.
âYes, Master,â Mr. Carroll responded. He was hypnotized.
Warwick smiled. Finally, something was going right. âI want you to find a young warlock carrying a staff with a glowing black jewel,â he said. âSeize itâand eliminate him.â
âYes, Master,â Mr. Carroll replied.
He stepped off the porch. His foot landed right in a jack-oâ-lantern, but he kept walking with the pumpkin stuck on his foot.
Then Warwick and Hoot followed Frankendude out of the yard.
M eanwhile, the Buddies wandered down Main Street. âI think we lost him,â Rosebud said, looking behind her.
âWhy is that ghost dude after us?â Mudbud wondered.
B-Dawg shrugged. âMaybe he wants to drink our blood.â
âThatâs vampires,â Rosebud told him. âMaybe he wants to eat our brains,â B-Dawg suggested.
Rosebud sighed. âThatâs zombies.â
âMaybe he wants to devour everything he sees,â B-Dawg said.
âThatâs Budderball,â Rosebud replied.
Mudbud was still thinking about his question. âItâs probably because B-Dawg released it from the mirror,â he said.
âOh, sure, dawg, blame me!â B-Dawg exclaimed.
The puppies continued down the street thinking they had gotten rid of Pip. But little did they know that they hadnât lost the ghost at all! He was still floating behind them, dressed in his sheet costume.
Finally the Buddies arrived at a darkened store. The sign over the door identified it as the Fernfield Shop of Curiosities.
The puppies looked up nervously, and Buddha led the way inside through a doggy door. The place was filled with all sorts of mystical stuffâbeads, incense, tarot cards, and other oddities.
âHello?â Buddha called out. âIs anyone home?â
âCheck out this crystal ball,â Budder-ball said, spotting a large glass orb on a table.
Buddha was still looking for his friend. âZelda?â he called out.
Suddenly the image of a dog appeared in the crystal ball. âWho wants to know?â a voice asked.
âAaaah!â B-Dawg cried. âThe gumball is talking to us!â
âItâs me, Buddha,â Buddha said to the dog in the crystal ball, âand my brothers and sister. The Buddies.â
Suddenly, a head popped out from behind the crystal ball. It was Buddhaâs friend Zelda, a Chinese crested dog dressed as a gypsy. She hadnât been inside the crystal, merely behind it!
âWelcome,â she said to the puppies. âI am Zelda. I am all-knowing and all-seeing. I specialize in the mystic and otherworldly.â
âWe need your help,â Buddha told her urgently. âThis ghost has been chasing us.â
Zelda nodded. âThis is Halloween, the only night spirits are free to roam,â she replied. âWe must make contact with this ghost of yours.â
Just then, Pip floated in through the wall. Budderballâs eyes widened. âThereâs the ghost!â he said, pointing at Pip.
Zelda looked at Pip. âGhost?!â she cried. Then she fainted.
The Buddies all froze in terror as Pip floated toward them.
âPlease,â Pip begged them. âIâm not going to hurt you.â
âThatâs what ghosts always say before they eat you,â B-Dawg said.
âGhosts donât eat,â Pip told him.
Budderballâs eyes went wide. âThatâs the saddest thing Iâve ever heard!â
Suddenly, Zelda stirred. Then she woke up. When she saw Pip, she shrieked again. But this time she didnât pass out.
âI know I look strange,â Pip told everyone. âBut I was once a pup just like you all. My name is Pip.â
Buddha gasped. He remembered the kidsâ class trip. âYouâre the pup from the story?â he asked in disbelief.
âYes. Iâve been like this ever since that night. The Hound did this to
