thing tomorrow, so it needs to be done today.”
Perfect. And it’s already five o’clock. This client has dicked me around for weeks, and we had to work around all the other trades in a last minute rush. It’s no fucking wonder there was some damage. I just wanna get home, but if I tell him I’ll come back tomorrow, it’s only gonna get us in the shit.
“I’ll sort it now. Don’t stress. I’ll be back with some gear to patch it.”
When I drag myself through the door at seven, Eevie’s lying lengthways on the couch, and watching the news.
“Hey,” she whispers, as I crawl over the cushions, and slump on top of her.
“Hey you,” I say, breathing out, brushing my stubbly cheek in the crook of her neck. I kiss below her ear, and she jerks when I bite her earlobe. That always drives her crazy.
Eevie squirms beneath me, taking my head in her hands.
“Good day?” I ask, hoping she’s not too stressed about how she went on her exam.
“Yeah, it was a good day. Sorry, I haven’t found the energy to cook yet. I’m just wiped.”
“That’s fine, I’ve had a shit of a day. Let’s go out and get somethin’ easy for dinner.”
She sighs loudly and a wide smile stretches across her face. “That’s sounds perfect.”

We drive to May’s Thai, a restaurant not far from home. I’ve been here countless times on my own when I couldn’t be bothered cooking for one, but it’s been a while. At least I know I can rely on this place. It’s tried and tested.
“Mr Aidan. How are you?” May, the owner of the restaurant, greets me warmly at the door. I smile down at her. May leans her head right back to look up at me and playfully slaps me on the arm. “My cooking no good for you anymore?”
“No, May. Course not. I still love your cookin’.” Holding Eevie’s hand, I pull her through to the crowded entry. May looks Eevie up and down, narrowing her eyes.
She smiles wickedly and winks at me. “Oh, I see. You got lovely girl now, no room for old May.” She always stirs trouble with me. She can’t help herself, but she’s funny as shit.
I chuckle. “May, this is Eevie.”
“Hi, May,” Eevie says, and grins. Eevie offers her hand, and May takes it with both of hers and shakes.
“Eevie, this boy is one of my favourites. You very lucky.”
“Yes, May, I am,” Eevie says, and smiles at me.
“Good girl.” May nods, and takes two menus from the counter. “Let’s get you a nice table, yes?”
We follow May as she weaves through the crowded restaurant, and seats us in the far back corner. Eevie’s happy for me to order, so I pick some of my favourite dishes, which I know she’ll like, and a couple of beers. After the day we’ve had, we both need one.
May rushes off to the kitchen with our order.
“The exam go okay?” I ask.
“Yeah. I think I covered everything well,” Eevie says.
“That’s good. I thought you might’ve been worried about it.”
“Nah. Not worth worrying about it after it’s done.”
True. I like her attitude .
“I wonder if you had something to do with how I coped today.” Eevie presses her lips together.
“What do you mean?” I ask.
“Our little start to the day got me in a pretty positive mood.”
“Yeah? I was right that my day would turn to shit after that, but fuck me if that wasn’t an impressive start.”
Eevie laughs softly and takes my hand from across the table. She runs her fingers over the callouses on my palm. “I’m sorry you had a bad day. Wanna talk about it?”
If I did, she’d be the only one I’d wanna talk to. “Nah, I’m over work for today.”
May delivers spring rolls and Thai fish cakes to our table with a cheeky smile, and we start eating.
“You haven’t seen any mail come for me this week, have you?” Eevie asks.
    “No, why?”
“I had my bills re-directed a while ago. I just thought I should’ve at least got a phone bill by now.”
    “I wouldn’t worry. I’m sure you’ll get a
