going?’
    ‘Darrien’s taking
me to Vegas for the weekend. Bye.’ She blew her sister a kiss and opened the
door.
    ‘Paulina, be careful,’
Rosina said in a serious voice.
    ‘You should wish
me to have fun—.’
    ‘I mean it, Paulina,’
Rosina said sternly. ‘Take care.’
    ‘Alright. See
you when I get back.’ She left Rosina standing there as she closed the door.

Eleven

    When she opened
the door Imposimato was standing there with a bottle of Krug Grand Cuvée in his
hand. He lifted it up in his hand with a broad smile on his face. ‘People who
live in such opulent places should enjoy such marvelous champagne.’
    She smiled back.
‘I’m afraid I can’t.’
    ‘Why not?’ he asked,
still standing outside the door.
    ‘Come on in.’
    He obliged, and after
she closed the door she invited him to the dinner table that was already set
with dishes, lit candles and flowers that made it a wonderful sight to behold.
It thrilled him that she had gone through the trouble of trying to impress him.
    ‘Looks
delicious,’ he complimented. ‘Will go well with the champagne.’
    ‘I’m afraid I can’t
indulge in that,’ she told him, placing a napkin upon her lap.
    ‘Why not? This
is top grade champagne; to go with excellent food and to be enjoyed in the company
of exceptionally beautiful women.’
    She smiled, and at
that moment he realized for the umpteenth time that she truly was a very
beautiful woman. ‘I do not take alcohol,’ she said.
    ‘Hm,’ he mused
quietly.
    ‘If all the
money that the world spends on liquor and cigarettes was instead put in a vault
somewhere we would have more than enough money to feed all the world’s starving
children, especially in Africa.’
    ‘True. I feel
guilty already.’
    ‘Put the bottle
on the table, and let’s enjoy dinner.’
    He did as told, and
picked up a knife and a fork. ‘Alright, here goes.’
    He cut a peace
of the fish. He cleared his throat elaborately and threw the piece into his
mouth. He instantly started coughing like he was choked, stood up and did an
excellent theatrical show of being unable to breathe.
    Rosina was
shocked, and was rising to her feet when he suddenly stopped his act and sat back
down.
    ‘Woman, you want
to kill me?’
    She laughed.
‘Get outta here.’
    ‘I’m kidding.
It’s great. Delizioso.’
    A moment of
silence passed.
    Rosina cleared
her throat. ‘Ferdinando.’
    ‘Yes?’
    ‘I got some
questions that I wanna ask you.’
    He smiled at
her. ‘I was wondering when the interview would start.’
    With an amused
smile, she let that pass. ‘What do you do?’
    He did not bat an
eyelid. ‘Construction.’
    ‘Seriously?’
    ‘I like tearing
things up and building them up again. Greatest job in the world.’
    ‘Or you mean
ordering people around while you while away time doing nothing?’ she taunted.
    ‘Does it occur
to you – beautiful lady – that for any group of people to be productive there
is need for a sharp and decisive leader?’
    She laughed for a
short while. ‘Family?’
    ‘Only child. My
beloved Papa died eight years ago, and my mother – bless her soul – followed 3
years—.’
    He stopped in mid-sentence,
having looked up above her head and noticed a poster of a fiery redhead. ‘Wow!’
he exclaimed and was silent for a moment. ‘Who’s that?’
    ‘My younger
sister. Her name’s Paulina.’
    ‘I’d like to
meet her.’
    ‘What? Am I not
enough for you?’ she teased.
    ‘Jesus!’ he
exclaimed again, his eyes transfixed on the portrait, and continued as if he
hadn’t heard her. ‘Who shot that picture?’
    She did a shoot
for GQ and decided that was her best shot.’
    ‘Are you
kidding? GQ?’ He rose to his feet in a mesmerized state and crossed over to the
picture. He stood before it and examined it reverentially. ‘What does your
sister do?’
    Paulina sighed
inaudibly. ‘Of all things, she runs a wedding-dress boutique and has surprised
everyone – including me, frankly
