work and the result of your urinalysis. Before we go over them, let’s examine you first.”
“Alright.”
“Get undressed, put the gown on, and lie on the table for me. I’ll return in cinco minutos .”
Ayana was undressed in two minutes. She took the time to observe her surroundings. Her eyes watered until she noticed a chart beside her displaying the various stages of pregnancy. Each stage broke down the developmental process of the baby. She reached for her stomach. The idea of life growing at that very second amazed her.
This is my baby. I will raise it on my own if I have to and I don’t need any handouts either.
The doctor re-entered the room with the nurse. He brought her chart with him, skimmed it over, and then washed and dried his hands. After he sat on his stool, he scooted over to the end of the table.
Lord, I’m nervous. I don’t like these examinations.
“Relax your legs out to the sides. Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. This will help you to relax your pelvic area.” The doctor instructed Ayana.
“OK.” Ayana did as she was instructed.
“I’m going to first take some samples of tissues just to make sure your cervix is healthy without any abnormal cells present, then I’ll check with a small pressure using two of my fingers, alright?.”
“ Si .”
The examination took about fifteen minutes to complete. Ayana felt like it couldn’t be over soon enough.
“Señorita Simmons, when was the first day of your last period?”
“I think it was July the twenty-eighth.”
OK, come on, tell me. When should I expect to have my baby?
“Well, all the signs are present and the test confirms that you are in fact pregnant.” Dr. Gomez was examining his pregnancy calculation wheel. “Ah, let’s see…your bundle of joy is expected to arrive around May fourth. But really, your baby decides when it will arrive. It could be before or after your due date. What do you think about that?”
Ayana smiled as she thanked the doctor. The last thing she wanted was someone else poking and prying in her affairs. She knew how some hospitals can get if they suspect you’re having trouble with your pregnancy.
“Thank you, Dr. Gomez. This is good to know,” Ayana replied with a quick glance as she readjusted the sheet that covered her to avoid looking at the doctor.
“You’re very welcome. Make sure you pick up your prescription for your prenatal vitamins. And don’t forget, if you don’t have a regular doctor you can continue to get your prenatal care here.”
“ Si, gracias . I will.”
“Take care, Señorita Simmons.”
The nurse recapped all that the doctor said and handed Ayana her prescription and some information pamphlets about the baby’s development. She left out the door and headed to Atticus’s office.

Walking into Escobar Telecom Communications Company triggered Ayana’s memories. Even the smell of the environment reminded her of her first encounter with Atticus. It was about six months ago, but it seemed like just yesterday when he kissed her hand, walked her to her car, and made love to her for the very first time. The eighteenth floor is where she was headed. Even in her daze, she knew exactly where to find him.
The elevator doors opened and Ayana bypassed Señora Maria, the receptionist, who ran behind her as she headed for Atticus’s office.
“Señorita Simmons, please wait, he’s in a meeting!”
Ayana disregarded her command and entered the office unannounced. Atticus and five women were sitting at his conference table. They all froze in place and ceased their talking to focus on her. Atticus got up and walked over to Ayana as he escorted her by the arm to the other side of the room. He questioned her in a deep whisper.
Hm, mama always said, Why should the farmer buy the cow if he can get the milk for free? I sure hope this is not what I’m dealing with. I’m just pissed that everytime I turn around, nothing but women are constantly
