his brother.
âBigelow? You mean Charlie Bigelow?â Jesse asked.
âYeah. Since youâve heard of âim, then you probâly know that heâs been robbinâ stores, stagecoaches, and even held up a bank, claiminâ to be you,â Charley Ford said.
âThatâs how come thereâs been all these robberies that youâve been blamed for that you didnât do,â Bob said.
âLike you say, I have heard of him, but Iâve never met him,â Jesse said.
âWell, if you was to see him, youâd think you was lookinâ in a mirror,â Bob Ford said.
âHe looks that much like me?â
âYeah, he does. Thatâs how come heâs been able to convince everâone that heâs you,â Charley said.
âSo, when I say Iâm goinâ to collect the reward on you, what Iâm actually goinâ to do is collect it on him,â Bob said, âand pass him off as you. That way, the law will think theyâve got their man, and youâll be free and clear. Nobody will be looking for you again.â
Jesse shook his head. âThat wonât do. If you take him in, heâll just say that he isnât me. And there are enough people who actually do know me that theyâll know heâs tellinâ the truth.â
âHe wonât be tellinâ nobody anythinâ if heâs dead,â Bob said.
âYou plan to kill him?â
âAt your house,â Bob said.
âAt my house?â
âIt has to be done at your house, if we are to pass him off as being you.â
Jesse shook his head. âNot with Zee and the kids there.â
âYouâll just have to get them out of the house for a while.â
âHow are you goinâ to get Bigelow to come to my house?â
âI know that he would like to join up with your gang,â Bob said. âHeâs asked me a couple of times to talk to you about it. All I have to do is tell âim that weâre goinâ to pull another job ân you want him to join us.â
Jesse drummed his fingers on the table for a moment or two. âAll right,â he said. âGo see him, and the three of you come over to the house for breakfast tomorrow morning.â
Â
Â
âI thought you werenât going to do any more jobs,â Zerelda said as she cut bacon for their breakfast.
âIâve got to, Zee. We didnât get but three thousand dollars from the last job, which I had to divide that up with the others. And that was six months ago. Weâre running out of money.â
âWhen, Jesse? When are you going to stop? We have two kids who donât even know their real names. Jesse and Mary think they are Tim and Mary Howard.â
âFor now itâs best that they donât know their real names. We canât take the chance on one of them saying something. In fact, why donât you take them down to the park this morning before the men come? You donât need to know whatâs going on anyway.â
âAll right,â Zerelda said. âBut, Jesse, please promise me. After today, no more jobs.â
Jesse put his hands on Zereldaâs shoulders and looked straight into her eyes.
âI promise you, Zee,â he said. âAfter today, Jesse James will pull no more jobs.â
âNor Tom Howard,â she said.
Jesse nodded. âNor Tom Howard,â he promised.
Â
Â
Shortly after Zee left, Bob Ford arrived with his brother and Charlie Bigelow.
âThanks for agreeing to take me into your gang,â Bigelow said.
âIâm not taking you into my gang,â Jesse replied. âI no longer have a gang.â
âBut, Bob told meââ
âHe told you that so that you would come,â Jesse said. âBigelow, what were you thinking, killing and robbing, and passing yourself off as me?â
âI . . . I only did it out of respect for you,â
