Dash asked.
âNo,â Jamie said, shaking her head. âNot yet.â
âDiscúlpame, no entiendo inglés,â Dash said, smiling and pretending not to understand English. He was good-looking and clearly romantic, but more than that, he had a kind of easy confidence. His friend Troy seemed like a junior varsity Romeo by comparison.
Binky suddenly stood up and came over to them. âI hate to break up your tête-à -tête, but this meeting is actually about me and my quinceañera .â
Dash turned away from Jamie and gave Binky a hug. âYouâre right, sis. Mom would be so proud of you right now. Besides, I should get to golf practice. You coming, Troy?â
âYeah, reluctantly.â Troy stood up and blew kisses at Alicia and Carmen. âOne of you girls is going to be the future Mrs. Troy Haviland.â
Carmen and Alicia guffawed at his audacity.
âOh, yeah? Which one?â Alicia asked.
âDoesnât matter which one,â Troy said. âYouâre both gorgeous.â
âI feel so special right nowânot,â Carmen said, shaking her head.
âNice meeting you, Alicia and Carmen,â Dash said with sincerity. Then he turned to Jamie. âYouâll find that I donât scare easily.â
âYeah, yeah, you got mad game,â Jamie said, waving him away. But the smile on her face suggested she wanted anything but for him to go away.
She watched him leave with a mixture of interest and frustration. He was cute, but so what? Clearly, he knew it, which made him automatically less cute. But then again, he also seemed smart, which was totally cute. She was in such a daze that she didnât hear Alicia calling her.
âJamie? Hello, Jamie?â Alicia said. âTime to go. Weâre going to brainstorm some more about themes for Binky.â Turning, she said to their new client, âAnd youâll meet us tomorrow afternoon at my house to give us your ideas and hammer out a plan. Sound good?â
Binky nodded.
âWorks for me,â Jamie said absently.
Binky then walked the girls down to the dock and gave them each a bear hug. âThis is the most fun Iâve had in, like, forever,â she said. âI canât wait until tomorrow! How do you say good-bye in Latina?â
âUmm, we usually just say adios,â Alicia said.
âI was just kidding!â Binky laughed. âIâm blond, but not a dumb blond. Adios! Adios! Adios!â
She gave them all gigantic hugs once again and ran back up the dock, disappearing from view.
âSO, WHAT DO you think?â Carmen asked on the ride back to reality.
âSheâs friendlier than I wouldâve thought,â Alicia said.
âSheâs not friendly, sheâs fake,â Jamie countered. The fresh air and salt water had cleared her mind of Dashâmostlyâand she was back on her anti-Binky bent. âAnd sheâs used to buying her friends.â
âI dunno,â Carmen said. âI get the feeling that Binkyâs the sort of girl who knows a lot of people, but doesnât necessarily have a ton of close friends.â
âMe, too,â Alicia concurred.
âWell, asking people, âHow do you say good-bye in Latina?â is not the way to make friends,â Jamie said, clearly bothered. âItâs, like, hello, Einstein, âLatinaâ isnât a language.â
âShe was just joking,â Carmen said.
âAre you so sure of that?â Jamie asked.
There was a moment of silence as all three girls stared into the distance. The sun was setting, and the Mortimer island receded into the distance like a picture on a postcard or in a travel magazine. The air was sultryâthe classic Miami mix of hot and humidâand the waters of Biscayne Bay glistened, emerald and aquamarine.
âI feel like Iâm in a movie,â Alicia and Carmen said at the same time.
They both began
