bid to become more fit. They were bright pink and luminous green and Melissa always felt like a fake in them. Now, however, she looked at herself up and down in the mirror and liked what she saw. I should make an effort more often.
Melissa walked out feeling confident about her mission ahead. When she got to the park she started a circular mission around where she knew there were always lots of people walking their dogs. She saw a guy waving at her from afar and she grinned. Wow! That was quick. I must be on fire today. She waved at him demurely and started walking towards him, all giggles and glee. It was only when she got near that she realized that he hadn’t been waving to her at all but rather to the girl behind her. Also, when he saw her walking towards him he pointed to her shoes and told her that she had stood in dog poo. Not the greatest start to her park mission. She quickly got out a tissue and wiped up the mess, looking sadly at her now messed up shoes and went to wipe them a bit more on the grass while the dogs tugged at their leads to walk more.
“Hang on guys!” She complained at them while trying to fix her shoes but as she shouted at them they saw a big dog walking towards them and they pulled harder than usual. The sudden and unexpected force caused her to let go of their leash and to fall flat on her face.
“Pfft!” She complained spitting out a mouthful of wet grass.
“John! Jack! Come back here this instant!” Of course the dogs had run straight to the big dog and made instant friends. They were all walking in circle sniffing each other out, while the owner walked towards Melissa to help her up. Of course, as fate would have it, the owner of the big dog turned out to be gorgeous. He held out his hand and lifted her up.
“So who’s taking who for a walk?” He asked.
“I ask myself that question many times. They’re very forceful for such little dogs. How do you manage yours?”
“Oh he’s very lazy for such a big dog. I’m Ryan, by the way.”
“Melissa. And that’s Long John Silver and Sir Jack.”
“Mine’s called Slug. Seriously, he was lazy even as a puppy.”
“SLUG! You’re cute. Uh… I mean the name is cute. The name.” Melissa realized she had gone as pink as her shoes and quickly tried to laugh the situation off.
“I’ll tell Slug you like his name! And… thank you.”
“I’m a mess today. Would you like to go on a date?”
“Uh… excuse me?”
“Oh dear. I’m out of control. I’m sorry. I was meant to flirt and then wait for you to ask me. But somehow I just ended up blurting that out without wanting to.”
Thankfully Ryan was laughing. “You flatter me. Thank you very much for the kind and lovely offer Melissa. I can’t though. I’m actually married. Thomas and I have been together for three years now.”
THOMAS! “Oh my goodness. I am such an idiot. And a very embarrassed one at that. No wonder I can’t meet a man.”
“Actually, you’re very cute, and very endearing. I’m surprised you don’t have a man.”
“Are you sure you have to be married?”
“Married and gay! Double whammy. But if I wasn’t then I’d totally have said yes.”
“You flatter me.”
“I speak only of the truth. Now, would you like to walk with me? Seems our dogs have become the best of friends.”
Melissa laughed and agreed. As they walked they talked and Melissa found Ryan incredibly easy to
