spoke, the more confused she was becoming.
“Are you sorry?” Ivy took a sip from her drink. Luther
rubbed his hand across his stubble covered chin.
“Some people…they have to maintain an appearance.” He looked
at Ivy to see if she was listening. “I was one of those people. The bikers I
ran with at the time, you just didn’t say no to them.” Ivy listened intently.
“When this guy said no, well, if I let him get away with it, then he wouldn’t
be the last. You don’t get respect by being the guy who lets a debtor get
away.” Ivy took a heavy breath. She had hoped that he would say yes. She had
hoped that he would tell her how the very thought of what he had done haunted
his dreams. Instead, he had explained to her the inner workings of a thuggish
motorcycle gang and it had left her feeling heavy.
“Did you have to kill him?” Ivy asked in a hushed whisper.
Luther jutted out his bottom jaw and shook his head.
“It wasn’t the intention. He was supposed to get a few
broken bones, but things went too far.” Ivy chewed her bottom lip nervously.
“Did you go to prison?” Luther looked down at the barbed
wire tattoo around his wrist, Ivy followed his gaze. “How long for?” Luther
shook his head.
“It doesn’t matter. The point is, that I am the bad man your
parents warned you about. While I think you are exceptionally beautiful, I’m
not about to subject you to a lifestyle like mine. A girl like you is supposed
to meet a boy like…hell, I don’t know…a nice country boy with a pickup truck
and a cowboy hat and a piece of straw hangin’ outta his mouth.” Ivy chuckled as
she finished her soda.
“What if I don’t want a nice country boy?” Luther chuckled.
“That wasn’t the point, honey. The point was, that you want
and need someone who isn’t like me.” Ivy took her straw out of her glass and
began to chew the end.
“But what if I want someone like you?” Luther licked his
bottom lip and shook his head.
“Be careful what you wish for.” Luther slid himself
backwards off his stool ad with a wink he walked back in the direction of the
pool table.

Chapter 6

Ivy sat at the bar nursing soda after soda until closing
time. She wasn’t entirely sure why she was staying, but she also couldn’t bring
herself to leave. When LaTisha gave last call at the bar, Ivy watched as
Luther’s buddies began downing their beers. She saw him glance over at her
before finishing his own. As they all filed out, Luther hung behind.
“LaTisha, I’ll close up for you tonight.” Ivy gave her a
smile. “There’s someone I want to talk to.” Ivy jerked her head to the pool
room where Luther stood just watching her. LaTisha nodded.
“I’ll get everyone out, you just lock up when you’re done?”
Ivy nodded.
Walking in to section three when it was empty was a strange
feeling. Ivy glanced behind her at the guests filing out of the door and then
looked up at Luther.
“You stayed…” She said as she longed to reach out and touch
him. He looked down at her.
“So did you…” Ivy shrugged as she slid on to a stool at a
small counter height table. Luther sat across from her.
“I told you, I like you.” Luther laughed quietly.
    “You are a strange girl…”
    “Ivy.” Ivy added. Luther nodded.
“You are a strange girl, Ivy.” Ivy smiled.
“The heart wants what it wants.” Luther shook his head.
“You’re in dangerous territory, kid.” Ivy looked down at her
slender fingers resting on the tabletop.
“We all have to live dangerously once in a while.” Luther
smirked.
“Shouldn’t you be getting home?” He nodded at the front door
where LaTisha was flipping over the ‘Closed’ sign. Ivy shook her head.
“No, we can stay as long as we like, I have the keys.”
It was two hours after the cleaning crew had left when Ivy
finally slid off her stool and yawned.
“Okay, maybe I should get home.” Luther nodded and slid back
off his own stool. Ivy stepped forward, she
