she ought to find some spices or excuse for the weird dinner, but instead Lisa dug out a big spoon and dug in.

There was a knock at the door, and she didn’t want to answer. All she wanted to do was eat. But she sniffed the air and picked up Raj’s scent. His scent? But the door’s closed , she thought. It was too odd not to understand and so she set the bowl aside. She wanted answers for what was happening to her.

She flung open the door. He walked in without an invite, much as she had before. “Nice place. I couldn’t let it end where it was, though.” He said. Spotting the bowl, he licked his lips. “Good idea. I can’t blame you.”

“What is happening to me? You know, don’t you?” She demanded, getting in his face. He backed away, but she pursued him to the bookshelf, pressing against him. A complex desire to fuck and to kill him arose inside her and she bore her teeth looking up at him.

In return, he just smiled. “I can’t believe he didn’t tell you. It’s The Change, of course.”

“What Change? What the hell are you talking about?”

He gently pushed her away and found a seat in her recliner. “You’re becoming one of us. We don’t know why it happens or exactly how, but in very rare instances if you mate with one of the Secret Society, you can gain our ability to shift form. It’s not a guarantee what you’ll become,” he continued smoothly, as though explaining a sophisticated architectural design to an underling. “But your odds are likely to take on the characteristics of the shifter you select as your mate. Right now, it could be either of us.”

Her head felt like it was on fire from the rising blood of sexual desire, the confusion, the fury. “You’d better make a lot more sense or … or … I’ll tear you apart!”

“I bet you’d like that.” He said, rather smugly. “But the fact is, I am the hunter and you are my prey. I have claimed you for myself from that filthy panther. The sooner you accept your new form, the happier you’ll be.”

She paced before him, and as she observed her own behavior began to laugh. “Of course. I get it. I’m turning into a fucking panther, aren’t I? I’m not just going insane. Well- I might be.”

He held up a pill bottle. “This will suppress your instincts and prevent you from undergoing a full change. From time to time, the pills won’t work and you’ll know it. Mating can help. Going into the wilderness for a few days to hunt and be your new, more natural self is the ultimate solution. But these pills won’t do a damn thing for you until you’ve chosen your mate. And you, my dear, will be mine.”

    “And what are you?”

“A prince of India. A tiger. Join me or ...” He flashed an evil smile when he said this, showing his own slightly sharpened teeth. “The other option isn’t something I’d look forward to.

She was surprised to find her own teeth were becoming sharper. She felt them with her tongue and found herself giving him a low growl.

As he made his proclamation, the door swung open. They both looked and saw Jerome, his nose sniffing the air. He saw Raj and started for him.

The two were upon each other with fists flying in a moment. The intensity of their fighting warned Lisa that they’d destroy her home without realizing it and, possibly, one of them would die in the process. She roared and stepped between them.

“No!” She shouted, and they stood apart, heaving and angry. She placed a hand on each of their chests. “I choose. Not you.”

“Then choose.” Jerome demanded, glaring at his opponent. “Tell me it can’t be him. He’s unworthy of you.”

“And this mongrel will never come between us.” Raj insisted, a dangerous look passing over his face as he said so.

She grabbed them each by the shirt and pulled them to her, each flanking her hip. “I will choose.” Lisa demanded, feeling heat rise within her. “I
