you wanted.”
She shook her head. “Thanks, but no thanks, Trent.”
“What do you mean? I thought you said you wanted me to help you with your problem.”
“I did, but that was before you got all high and mighty about cheating. As many women as you have running through here? Just ’cause I’m big don’t mean I ain’t got no pride, Trent.”
    “Come on, Viola,” I pleaded.
I knew it would probably make me sick to my stomach, but I decided to use a desperate tactic. I whispered to her, “Remember when you asked me to go down on you last time and I told you I don’t do that?”
“Mmm-hmm. I knew your ass was lying.”
“I wasn’t lying, but I’m willing to try it now. Come on, let’s go back over to my place.”
She smiled, so I think I piqued her interest. “You mean it? You’re really willing to try it for me?”
“Of course I am.” I tried to guide her toward my apartment. “I just need to get that money back so they won’t repossess my car. Then I’m gonna eat you like a turkey on Thanksgiving Day.” That is, if I don’t throw up first, I thought.
Viola stared at me with an erotic smile. It was pretty obvious by her dazed look and heavy breathing that she was daydreaming about my head between her legs. I was sure that any moment she was going to hand me back my money and drag me to my apartment for some of her funky lovin’. But to my chagrin, she flashed the money in my face, then tucked it away securely in her bra.
    “Viola, what you doing?”
She stepped into the rental office. “I’m gonna put this money in the safe, then I’m gonna take my ass over to the Benny’s Bar in Hollis and find me a real man. One who appreciates a woman like me.” She started to close the door. I stopped it with my foot.
“I appreciate you, Viola,” I told her desperately.
“No, you don’t. Only thing you care about is that car. Now get your foot out my door.”
“Come on, Viola. I thought we said we were gonna help each other.”
“We were. But I changed my mind. Like I told you before, I gots my pride.” She slammed the door on my foot and I yelped. As soon as I pulled my foot out of the door, I heard the lock click. The repo men must’ve been listening, because I could hear them laughing as they got in the tow truck and pulled away with my car.
“Don’t worry, baby,” I mumbled as I watched my car drift from sight. “I’m gonna get you back.”
Desperate, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my cell phone. I hit the numbers 6 and 9, then speed dial.
“Hi,” a familiar woman’s voice answered, “I’m unable to come to the phone right now but please leave your name, number and a short message at the sound of the tone, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”
“Shit,” I mumbled under my breath before leaving a message. “Look, it’s me, Trent. I need to see you. It’s important. Call me back on my cell. You know the number.”

Manhattan Proper was packed when I walked in around eleven o’clock. I was looking for Trent. He’d asked me to meet him at the small club on Linden Boulevard in Cambria Heights, Queens. I wasn’t sure what he wanted, but he’d been calling my cell phone all night, leaving messages that he needed to speak to me as soon as possible. Usually, I would have called him right back, but I was at the hairdresser getting my dreads twisted and accidentally left my cell in my apartment. I didn’t get his messages until I got home. My unavailability must have really pissed him off, ’cause his last message was downright indignant. He told me in no uncertain terms to make sure I brought my black ass right over to the club when I got home. So as usual, when Trent called I came running.
As I slid onto a bar stool, I smiled at Tim, the sexy almond-skinned bartender. He smiled back flirtatiously, wiping the area in front of me with one hand as he placed an apple martini, my favorite drink, on the bar with the other. Damn, he was cute,
