children. Thatâs why Chloe was here at the mallâto get a new outfit for tonight. She goes crazy with my credit card!â
Diamondâs heart began pounding. Could it be possible she had the chance to hang out with real movie stars?
âTheyâre a great bunch of kidsâthey go to some pretty awesome parties together,â Thane told Diamond with a smile. âBut this is all so spur-of-the-momentâI just thought youâd like to meet them. But maybe next time.â
Diamond hesitated. Would there ever be a next time? Stars like that in her hometown? âWow. Iâd give anything . . . â
Thane nodded. âItâd be pretty specialâI can just imagine the photos youâd be able to post on Facebook.â
âMy friends will die of jealousy!â Diamond exclaimed. Then she glanced down at her flip-flops and cutoff tights and frowned. âI look like a mess. Iâm dressed for dance, not for meeting famous people.â
âNot a problem, great way to break the ice. Dancing, actingâitâs all art.â Then Thane thumped his forehead. âIt just occurred to meâone of the key roles in the movie is a dance part! Itâs a modernization of Peter Pan .â
âYouâre kidding!â Diamond jumped up from her seat. This was totally crazy! âOur studio is doing the ballet version of Peter Pan in June!â
It was Thaneâs turn to look surprised. âWhat a coincidence. I guess great ideas float in the universe at the same time.â He paused. âSo, whatâs your part? Wendy, I expect?â
Diamond flushed, embarrassed. âUh, not exactly. Iâm a pirateâSmeeâand Iâll probably fill in with a couple of small company parts.â
âBut not a lead?â Thane looked like heâd been personally insulted.
âOur teacher gives the big parts to different people every year. Iâm hoping for the lead next year when we do Cinderella .â
Thane frowned. âA year is a very long time to wait.â He paused again. âWell, anyway, that settles that. I guess if youâre already in a Peter Pan , you wouldnât be interested in our version.â
âSure I would! Iâd love to see it when it comes out,â Diamond told him as she picked the cheese off her pizza.
âIâll tell you whatâwhy donât you aim for better than that? Why donât you try out for a role? Youâd be just the kind of freshness Iâm looking for in the part of Wendy.â
âWhat? Youâre kidding.â Diamond felt her heart racing. Was he for real?
âI never joke about my profession,â Thane assured her. âIn fact, Iâd be honored if youâd try out for Wendy with the other kids.â
âMe?â Flustered, Diamond didnât know what to say. âNow?â she managed.
âI knowâitâs pretty last-minute. But my director is antsyâwe canât cast Pan until we cast Wendy, and I had to wait until some of the girlsâ schedules opened upâMs. Dawson, for instance, is one busy lady! A half dozen other girls flew in from New York this morning from the Alvin Ailey studioâthe part is an amazing opportunityfor a dancer. But I have to be bluntânone of them have your presence.â
Diamond tried to remember the last time someone told her she had âpresence.â Miss Ginger had often told her to stand straighter or balance better, but sheâd never actually been given a compliment like that. âReally?â she sputtered.
Thane smiled. âI have no need to lie to you.â
âBut . . . but I canât leave my friendâsheâll be here in a few minutesâand we have a show tonight,â Diamond said, straining around to see if Mercedes was coming. Her mind was doing crazy spirals as she let herself think about the possibilities.
âI
