have to spend another half hour battling through traffic to get somewhere decent.â
âActually, thereâs a little bistro at the corner,â Jasmine said. âWe could leave the cars here and just walk down to it.â
This time Jasmine caught the look that passed between Toni and Afrika. âI know what youâre thinking, so donât worry,â she said, . âIâve been there before with a friend. Itâs not expensive.â
âOkay, fine.â Toni put her keys back in her bag. âBut if I have to spend more than fifty dollars on lunch, youâre paying.â
Afrika snorted. âMake that thirty for me. Iâm self-employed and itâs hard out here for a pimp.â
Toni side-eyed her friend. âBet you paid more than thirty for that piece of rock hanging âround your neck.â
âHey!â Afrika grabbed her wooden beaded necklace and pendant and held it close to her chest. âYou know it was my only indulgence this month. You were with me when I bought it!â
âWhatâs with you today?â Jasmine glanced over at Toni as the three of them walked together. âYouâre a little more acidic than usual.â
âSheâs right,â Afrika agreed, still fingering her jewelery, a hurt expression on her face. âThat was below the belt.â
Toni sighed. âIâm sorry. Itâs just been a really bad day, thatâs all.â
âWhat happened?â
Toni frowned. âI got reassigned.â
âWhat?â Jasmine asked, surprised. âWhen?â
âThis morning.â
Toni scowled as she remembered her boss and editor in chief Naomiâs words after she had left the meeting with Gordon, the newspaperâs publisher. Gordonâs decision had stood. She was back to being a general assignment reporter.
âUmm-hmm. Itâs âcause of that foolishness from last night, ainât it?â Afrika cut her eyes at Toni.
âGirl, Iâm still mad at you about that. Youâre lucky my cousin Mikey could pull some strings to get us out. You know I ainât built for that kinda mess.â
âWhat mess?â Jasmine looked back and forth between Toni and Afrika as she rubbed her oversized tummy.
âIs this where weâre going?â Toni asked, as she pulled the door open to a small café-style shop. She stepped ahead to be seated, not waiting for the girls to catch up.
She didnât want to talk about last night. Afrika might have been mad about being locked up for less than an hour. But Toni was still mad about Mikeyâs nasty hand on her behind. Plus she would be lying if she said she wasnât just a little bit worried about what might come out of her kneeing him in the stomach. If that wasnât enough, she kept having random thoughts about Mr. Hotness, and his chocolate eyes.
âSo anyone gonna tell me what happened last night?â Jasmine asked once they were seated. She looked back and forth between Toni and Afrika, ignoring the menu the waitress had placed in front of her.
âYour sister-in-law got us arrested,â Afrika said grudgingly.
âSeriously?â Jasmine sighed. âAgain? This is what, the third time youâve been picked up?â Jasmine shook her head. âThey must have a special spot for you downtown now.â
âNot downtown,â Afrika said, her lip curling in disgust. âJust in the mini-precinct near Bankhead where my cousin happens to work.â
She turned to Toni. âWhy are you and him so familiar anyway? Mikeyâs my cousin and all, but I know you ainât messinâ with his nasty behind.â
âOf course not,â Toni said with disgust.
âSo howâre you getting him to pull those kinda strings for you on a regular?â Afrika asked.
Toni picked up a menu and yawned. âI let him take me out one time. He probably thinks thereâs a chance for something
