incident.
Â
Later that afternoon I got a phone call from Antonio. At first I wasnât going to answer it because I truly didnât havea thing to say, but at the last minute I changed my mind and decided to see why he was calling.
âWhat do you want?â I answered my phone in the nastiest tone I could summon up.
âUnlike you, I was calling to make sure you were okay. I canât believe you left me stranded at prom.â Antonioâs exasperation equaled my own.
âYou should not have allowed Priscilla to splash all that punch on me,â I said, getting angrier by the moment.
âI didnât even see her coming, Keysha. How was I supposed to stop her? I donât have eyes in the back of my head, you know.â
âWhatever, Antonio!â
âDo you know how awkward I felt walking around begging people to give me a ride home? I had to get a ride with one of the guys from the basketball team. Do you have any idea how embarrassing that was?â
âProbably as humiliating as someone putting all your businesses in the street or throwing liquid on your expensive prom dress, then running off leaving you looking all stupefied. Forget about you, how do you think I felt, you jerk?â I roared.
âStop twisting this around and making it about you, Keysha. Youâre not the only victim here.â
âYeah, and Iâm certainly not the one who had drama follow me to the prom. Now that I think about it, you probably knew Priscilla wanted to talk with you all along, but you avoided her until she forced you to hear what she had to say.â
âOh, so now youâre sticking up for Priscilla? You canât be serious!â I could tell by his voice that Antonio was extremely agitated.
âIâm not sticking up for her, Iâm just saying if I were in her shoes I might have tried something similar.â
âYou wouldâve tossed a bowl of fruit punch on me?â Antonio asked.
âNot that part. Iâm talking about when she announced to the world that she was pregnant with your baby. I know you said it wasnât your baby, but if it was, what would you do?â I asked, wanting to truly know what kind of man he was.
âItâs not my baby, so I donât see a need to even answer such a dumb question.â Antonio was defiant.
âHow is that a dumb question?â Confused, I wrinkled my eyebrows.
âBecause it is, Keysha. You donât go around asking guys what theyâd do if their girl came up loaded,â Antonio snapped.
âOkay, so what youâre really saying is that if we were to do it and I got pregnant, youâd turn your back on me,â I said, wanting to be certain I knew where I stood with him.
âThat wouldnât happen, because weâd use protection,â Antonio countered.
âThe only thing that protects one hundred percent of the time is not to do it at all. Abstinence. Even if you used a condom, those things can break sometimes.â
âI thought you went to Planned Parenthood and got the Pill?â Antonio asked.
âI did, but I havenât started taking them. Besides, taking the Pill is only like ninety-five percent safe. There is still a chance that I could get pregnant. How could you not know that?â I asked, utterly shocked by his lack of knowledge.
âItâs not my job to know about the Pill and other stuff that girls should be taking care of. If more girls would handle their business the way theyâre supposed to, there wouldnât be so many teen pregnancies.â
âI donât believe you just said that.â I felt the few remaining feelings I had for him freezing over.
âI donât see why. Itâs the girls who have to carry the baby for nine months and then bring it home from the hospital. Guys donât have to worry about stuff like that,â Antonio reasoned.
âYou would make a horrible father,â I said, hoping
