pleased with either of us if I send you back too sore to work.”

“What?” I said. I dropped his cock. “Why do you care what she thinks?”

Mr. Stannis sighed. “Like I said before, this place is an oasis for me. My own eccentricities aren’t lost on me, Tina. So when I find a situation that works, I go to great lengths to keep it that way.” He looked down at me. “Denise is a part of that. I’ve been coming here for years.”

“Have you fucked her?” I blurted out. I felt my face flush, my skin electric. I couldn’t believe the heightened sense of jealousy I was feeling over this.

“You know the way out,” he said, turning and walking out of the room.

    —

I slid my cardkey through the slot and entered the staff room that had been assigned to me. It was dark, and I could see my luggage resting against one of the chairs at the back of the room. So this would be my home until Denise decided my fate.

Just thinking about that woman made me angry. She pitted the other intern, Maggie, against me, making it clear that there was only one position open. We had two weeks to prove who was going to be the best employee. The other got the boot. And through it all, I had to consider that she was fucking Mr. Stannis.

Was she? He didn’t deny it. But he didn’t confirm it either. Why did I care so much? So many questions, and no answers were going to come to me here and now. I walked into the bathroom next to me, leaving a trail of peeled off clothes as I got into the shower.

The hot water poured down from the overhead rainshower fixture. It felt so good to scrub myself down, clear off the smell of sex and stress. I was just going to focus on my job, and whomever Mr. Stannis wanted to fuck, that was his business. I’d never been able to turn off my feeling before, but I had to learn someday.

    Might as well be today.

I turned off the shower and stepped out, grabbing a towel and drying myself while I walked back into the bedroom. In the darkness my foot hit a bag on the floor and I stumbled forward onto the bed, landing on someone.

“What the shit?” a high pitched voice cried out.

    I recognized that voice. Shit.

I hit the lightswitch on the wall.

Pulling the covers back, a very pissed off Maggie was glaring up at me. “What’s your problem?”

“Huh? Nothing,” I said, wrapping the towel around myself. “Am I in the right room?”

Maggie began to laugh, “Oh, did you think you’d get your own room? That’s adorable!”

“Shut up,” I said, walking over to my luggage. I pulled out my pajamas and slipped them on.

“We should set up some ground rules. At the very least, we’re going to be roommates for the next two weeks,” she said. “Then you’ll be back to small town obscurity, trailer parks and meth labs,” she added under her breath.

I crossed my arms. “Ground rules. Fine.”

“First, if you aren’t going to come in by midnight, you sleep in the hall. I need my beauty sleep,” she said as a matter of fact. She gestured to her face.

Shit, was it past midnight? “Fine,” I said.

“Second, clean up after yourself. I’m not going to bunk with a slob,” she said, pointing back towards the bathroom.

She had a point. “Fair enough,” I said, realizing for the first time that there was only one bed.

“Third, I don’t want to be your friend, and I definitely don’t want to be your cuddle buddy,” she said.

“Excuse me?” I said. “What are you saying? You think I’d want to cuddle up with you? Don’t flatter yourself!”

“Good, then we’re both on the same page. Now go clean up your shit, and be quiet about it.” She turned the light off and crawled back in the covers.

She had horrible manners, but her rules were reasonable. This would be a long two weeks, and hopefully we’d be out of each others hair during the whole time. Sure, we were competing for the same job, but there was no reason we couldn’t be civil about it.
