asked. âAnd did she leave by herself?â
âI saw her leave just before midnight,â Brook said. âShe was with Fitz.â
âThe police will want to question him,â Nancy said. She would have to notify Dean Jarvis.
âWait a minute,â Kristin said. âYouâre not saying that Fitz could have hurt Rosie, are you?â
âItâs possible,â Nancy said.
âNo way!â Brook said.
âFitz is like our brother,â Mindy added. âHeâs not the guy the police should be grilling.â
âBut he may have been the last person to see Rosie before the attack,â Bess pointed out.
âThis whole thing gives me the creeps.â Kristin stared at her plate before turning her hazel eyes on Nancy. âI know this is supposed to be your vacation, but could you do a little investigating?â
âYouâd have an edge over the police since youâre right here on campus,â Brook pointed out.
Nancy nodded.
âI just hope that Rosie will be able to identify her attacker,â Bess said. âThen the mystery will be solved.â
âIn the meantime,â Nancy said, âdoes anybody have any idea who might want to hurt Rosie?â
âThe whole thing seems pretty obvious to me,â Mindy said. âThink about it. Rosie was injured just after she was crowned. Now it sounds as if she wonât be out of the hospital in time for the Sweetheart Ball, which means the first runner-up will become Sweetheart. And that just happens to be Tamara Carlson, Rosieâs rival from Delta Zeta!â
âBut the note sounds like it came from an old boyfriend,â Bess pointed out. âCupid . . . and a broken heart.â
âCould be a smoke screen,â Mindy persisted. âThereâs bad blood between them, and Tamara can be vicious.â
âTamara Carlsonâvicious?â Bess asked. She and Nancy exchanged a look of disbelief.
Mindy nodded. âDo you know her?â
âWeâve met her,â Nancy said, shrugging. âAnother time when we were here. She never seemed vicious to me.â
Bess nodded in agreement.
âWell,â Mindy said, âlet me give you a juicy example. Last week we were eating in the dining hall when word came over the P.A. system that Rosie had won the Sweetheart election. Tamara was fuming. When Rosie got up to bus her tray, Tamara stuck out her foot and tripped her. Dishes shattered, and Rosie fell flat on the floor.â
âThat sounds pretty nasty,â Bess said.
Nancy agreed, and decided to have a talk with Tamara.
The opportunity came sooner than Nancy had expected. At noon she and Bess walked into the student union snack bar, looking for Ned. Instead Nancy spotted Tamara Carlson moving through the line.
âWhy donât you grab us a table?â Nancy murmured to Bess. âIâll be right back.â
She joined Tamara in line and tapped her on the shoulder. âTamara, remember me?â
The girl studied Nancy, then she smiled. âYouâre the detective, right?â
âNancy Drew. Iâm here to spend Sweetheart Week with my boyfriend,â Nancy explained, trying to set Tamara at ease.
âThatâs nice,â the girl said, sliding a slice of pie onto her tray. âBut arenât you investigating the attack on Rosie Lopez?â
Nancy glanced away. News traveled fast on a college campus. âNot officially,â she answered. âWhat do you know about it?â
âJust that sheâs in the hospital.â Tamara paid the cashier, then turned to Nancy. âIâm sorry about what happened to Rosie. It sounds awful. But I admit, I want to be the next Sweetheart. Her bad luck could be my big break.â She turned and walked to a table.
Nancy followed her. The chairs at the table were covered with Delta Zeta jackets.
âJust one more question,â Nancy said before Tamara had a
