thought.
Kevin hung up and Liza hit the speed-dial number for Markson Associates. Ysabel put her right through to Michelle, who listened in silence as Liza detailed the latest.
âI hadnât heard that Chissel was going out of town,â she muttered darkly. âDoes he think heâs going to mess with one of my clients? And you say that Peter Hake is up there?â
âYou know him?â Liza asked.
âIf Mirage Productions had an honest organization chart, which it doesnât, Hake would be vice president in charge of dirty tricks. Heâs Chisselâs enforcer and facilitator. On his old scamming businesses as well as his new career in films. He makes Tony Sopranoâs crew look like choirboys. Do you know how long heâs been up in Maidenâs Bay? I wouldnât put it past him to arrange the accident that took Terence Hamblyn out of the picture.â
âYouâre kidding!â When she didnât hear an answer, Liza added, âArenât you?â
âI donât know. Maybe not. Liza, you know that The Business is all about ego.â When Michelle referred to âThe Business,â she meant the film business. âItâs all about getting your way. Most big shots out here use money to throw their weight around. In the old days, they used to do more. When money didnât work, the old studios had fixers. They didnât care which side of the law they were playing on. They simply did what they had to do to get their way. Fixers were people like Peter Hake. Iâm surprised you havenât heard of him. Heâs been making quite a name for himself. Oh waitâ¦heâs a new name for you because he came into Mirage while you were busy soul searching up in Oregon. If youâd kept your nose to the grindstone, youâd be up on all the gossip.â
âSorry,â Liza said, not really meaning it. But it paid to throw in the odd symbolic grovel for her boss.
âHakeâs worked as Chisselâs âspecial assistantâ for the past few months, but heâs been into nastier stuff than most Hollywood arm-twisters. Hake is nothing more than a thug with a three-hundred-dollar haircutâa stupid three-hundred-dollar haircut,â Michelle added angrily. âHe was Chisselâs thug long before Ollie got stuck with Mirage.â
âBut Chissel is running the show now,â Liza said.
âThe question may be for how long,â Michelle replied. âOne of the things Buck is looking into is Chisselâs financials.â
âI have a hard time seeing him do that.â With his size, handsome but heavy features, and perpetual sunglasses, Buck Foremanâs appearance spelled C-O-P with a capital âintimidating.â If you wanted brains and muscle, Buck was your guy. But, in Lizaâs mind, anyway, forensic accounting didnât look like it would be one of his specialties.
âWhen Buck investigates someone, he investigates ,â Michelle replied. âThat includes bringing in any necessary professionals.â
âBut you didnât hear anything about Chissel coming up hereâor why,â Liza pressed on.
âNo,â Michelle said in a âheads will rollâ tone of voice. Her Hollywood intelligence system could probably rival the KGBâs in its prime. Certainly, she used it as ruthlessly. âYou can bet heâs not heading out to bestow good news on the crew, though.â She paused for a moment, and Liza heard the tickety-tack sound of computer keys in the background. She could just visualize Michelle leaning over the keyboard, calling up her calendar with one hand.
âYsabel can cancel tomorrowâs meetingsâIâm going up there.â
âMe, too,â Michaelâs voice chimed in. âItâll be just like the good old days.â
Thatâs what Iâm afraid of , Liza thought.
âSureâthe more the merrier,â Liza said.
