always be interrupted for food. Max knew sheâd have to wait until theyâd all had a good chew before science could move forward.
âWhen you switch on the Time and Space Machine,â Eleanor continued, âa virtual picture of the earth will appear on the screen. Simply type in where you want to go and the machine will zoom in to find it: a city, a street or even someoneâs house. All supported by extremely high-resolution imagery. Itâs like a massive surveillance camera with a powerful optical zoom lens.â
âAnd thatâs what we do when we want to travel too?â Linden asked.
âExactly the same. When the image of where you want to go appears on screen, press or say âtransportâ, just like before, and youâll be there around fifteen seconds later.â Eleanorâs face filled with a cheeky smile. âCome and try it out.â
Max, Linden and Ben walked up to the platform.
âMax, where would you like to search?â Ben asked.
Maxâs eyebrows wriggled across her forehead, before she looked up. âVenice.â
âVenice, eh?â Ben nudged Max and gave her a wink.
Venice was the location of their last mission and the home of Luca Cavello, the very Italian and very good-looking spy they worked with.
Max blushed and looked away.
âSimply type in the word âVeniceâ and the screen will immediately display the coordinates of the city before revealing your chosen destination. And â¦â Eleanor paused, âthere she is.â
The magnificent city of canals appeared before them, gleaming in the early morning light.
âI wonder if Lucaâs home?â Linden asked.
âWe can see,â Eleanor said. âWhere does he live?â
âRio della Verona canal. I canât remember the number, but it was around the middle. Wasnât it, Max?â
Before she could answer, Max watched as the Cavello Family Palazzo appeared before them, and on the top balcony, reading a book in the early light, was Luca. Max momentarily stopped breathing.
âAre you okay?â Linden asked.
âYes,â Max wheezed through an inhaled breath. âIâm okay. Why wouldnât I be okay? Donât I look okay?â
Linden knew what he saw and what was good for his health. âNo, you look great.â
âItâs like a virtual visual search engine for the entire planet,â Eleanor whispered. âItâs linked to asatellite that transmits to a database at Spyforce Headquarters in London and is updated every few minutes to even include weather and traffic conditions.â
âItâll be great for future missions,â Ben said. âLike having a giant pair of binoculars where you can see people on the other side of the world. Oh, and Quimbyâs been working alongside us and has created a Tracer Bug that can be planted on a person youâd like to trail. Whether it be a fellow agent you need to cover or a suspicious character youâre following, attach the bug and the machine will lead you to them. Itâs very cutting edge.â Ben nodded proudly. âAny more of those cheese and chutney sandwiches?â
Maxâs palm computer buzzed in her pocket. âItâs Steinberger.â Steinberger was the ever-efficient, shiny-shoed Administration Manager of Spyforce. âThey must be ready for us to start the mission.â
Ben stepped off the podium and walked to a small lounge area complete with bean bags, comfy chairs, a fluffy rug and a coffee table. âBring your computer here, Max, and I can hook it up so we can see Steinbyâs message on the big screen.â
Max followed her uncle. âYou have a lounge area in the lab?â
âThis is where I do some of my best thinking.â
Ben plugged a cable into the side of Maxâs computer while Linden pressed a remote control to lower the projection screen. Steinberger appeared before them, larger than
