“I’ll do what I can and leave the rest until I can get into town. Thanks, Roy.”
“You got it. You remember how to get back to your truck in case you need to leave when I’m gone?”
I bit back the urge to put on my best-dumb-brunette act and replied; “Sure do. I’m good.” Tapping my temple with one finger, “It’s all up here. Don’t you worry none.”
The sarcasm apparently lost on him, he smiled. “Alrighty then. I’ll just be headin’ out. See you soon, I hope.” He leaned in to kiss me and I turned my cheek just before his lips could touch mine.
“Oh, yes. See you soon.” Not if I could help it.
I breathed a huge sigh of relief once Roy was gone. I could finally get back to the business at hand. The hospitality was great, the romp was okay, but I needed to get settled so I could begin the hunt. I knew, in a place like this; a town that revolved aro und stories of goblins and strange creatures, there’d have to be a monster somewhere.
    Chapter Five
My red, satin sheets were a bit too big for the full-size bed, but I didn’t care. I piled my blankets and pillows on top of the out dated mattress, gathered my laptop and a cold drink so I could get busy after I took a shower. The water was blissfully hot, allowing me to feel much cooler than I actually was once I’d dried off and dressed in a thin cotton t-shirt and shorts.
Unfortunately, Roy had been right. The laptop and phone weren’t able to pick up any signal, so online searching was out of the question .
“Damn!” I slammed the computer shut and threw myself back onto the pillows. “Worst idea ever.”
Staring up at the surprisingly pristine ceiling, I let my mind wander. I knew I could write down everything I knew so far and I could always wait for Roy to get back home so that I could question him about what he might or might not know about the goblins-slash-critters in Hopkinsville, but did I really feel like listening to his sugary, southern drawl again? No. The only option I had at that point was to walk back to my truck and drive into town for the first night of the festival or stay inside as Roy suggested.
Never one to follow orders, I dressed quickly, pulling on a thin, black miniskirt and tank top. There was no way I’d be able to walk the long lane wearing any of the shoes I’d brought along, so I grabbed a pair of flat sandals, my purse and keys, walking out onto the large wooden porch barefoot.
The single light on Roy’s property seemed so far away, but it served as a beacon, letting me know with each step that I was still heading in the right direction. Ten minutes and a lot of sweat later, I was seated in my comfortable truck and ready to find the party.
Traffic was at a minimum and I had no problems finding my way back to the town square. From what I could tell, the festival wasn’t very busy and I couldn’t help but wonder why. I mean, after all, Darcy and Thelma sure made a big deal out of it. But, there just weren’t many people. Maybe I was too late?
“Did I miss all of the fun?” I parked in front of a diner that sat a block away from Town Hall. Sliding out of the truck, I walked towards where I thought the action might be. At Jack’s Diner, the lights were on, but through the window, I saw only two customers enjoying a meal. The other businesses in town looked much the same. If I hadn’t know there was supposed to be an event, I’d say the town was all but abandoned.
I could hear music playing as it echoe d through the small burg and large spotlight beams lit up the sky as they moved side-to-side. Once I rounder the corner, my eyes fell upon the smallest UFO I’d ever seen. Obviously a prop, it stood two-feet off the ground and probably ten feet in diameter. A flimsy, silver circular sheet tightly fitted to stakes in the ground and around the edges were large, multi-colored light bulbs that blinked in synchronicity with the music that was blaring from loudspeakers around the square. A makeshift
