Maybe Lauren was right
about him being a secret agent.
    She glanced over her
shoulder, listening to make sure Hughes wasn’t going to make a surprise
appearance before stepping inside to take a closer look. It wasn’t coordinates
for an enemy hideout or an encrypted message about his next mission, should he
choose to accept it. Which meant it probably wouldn’t self-destruct after she
read it, thank goodness. It was C++, a computer language she was familiar with.
    Colleen shook her head.
Kristy, Mia and Lauren would be so disappointed. Steven Hughes wasn’t a super
spy—he was a computer programmer.
    Well, damn. She hadn’t
expected that. Hughes was nothing like the guys in the nerd herd she was used
to working with. She tried to imagine him hunched over a keyboard, but couldn’t
quite picture it. And what the heck was with the cloak-and-dagger routine?
    Colleen studied the lines of
computer code. Since pretty much everything in the programming world was
written in C++, it took her a moment to figure out the code was for a video
game.
Like most games, the program was
complex, and though she hated to admit it, damn creative. From what she could
tell, it looked like Call of Duty meets World of Warcraft with a few
zombies tossed in for good measure. There were a few mistakes in the code here
and there, but overall, it was pretty clean. She wasn’t a die-hard gamer, but
this one looked like it’d be fun to play.
“What the hell are you doing
in here?”
    Colleen whirled around. Hughes
stood in the doorway, a pissed-off look on his handsome face.
    Crap.
    “I-I’m sorry, Mr. Hughes,”
she stammered. “I thought I heard a noise in here and came to check it out.”
    Okay, that sounded lame. From
the way his brows drew together, he clearly must have thought so, too.
    “That’s bullshit.” Hughes
strode into the room. “You were in here snooping around.”
    “I was not snooping.” Well,
maybe a little bit. “Look, I was just curious, that’s all. I’m sorry, okay?
I’ll leave.”
    Colleen tried to brush past
him, but Hughes caught her arm. His blue eyes glinted. “Not so fast. I warned
you not to come in here, and you deliberately did it anyway. You don’t think
you can just walk out of here after doing something like that, do you?”
Her pulse began to pound. If
he gave her a few smacks on the ass for making too much noise while he worked,
there was no telling how hard he’d spank her for sneaking into his secret room.
    “You’re insane if you think
I’m going to let you spank me again,” she told him.
    For one long moment, Hughes
stood towering over her while she glared up at him defiantly. Then his mouth quirked.
    “Actually,” he drawled. “I
was just going to toss you out and call the cleaning company to have you
replaced. But, now that you mention it, I think a spanking would be more
effective.”
    “Don’t you dare! ”
    But Hughes wasn’t listening.
Taking a seat on the closest chair, he gave her arm a tug that sent her
sprawling over his knee.
    Colleen lay there stunned,
her hair hanging down to the floor, her ass up in the air. Being bent over the
back of the couch had been embarrassing enough, but this position was
humiliating. And to make it worse, she’d worn shorts today instead of jeans.
Face red, she beat at his
muscular leg with her fist. “Let me up, dammit.”
    But Hughes only tightened his
hold on her. “Not until you learn your lesson.”
What was she, a child? “I
already said I was sorry. What more do you want?”
    “For a start? A sincere
apology.”
Did he have any idea how hard
it was to have a conversation while she was draped over his lap? She looked
over her shoulder at him. “I don’t know what the big deal is. So, you’re
designing a video game. Big deal. It’s not like I’m going to post it on Facebook.”
    “Good to know. But you’re
still getting a spanking.”
She opened her mouth to tell
him what a bastard he was, but the only thing that came out
