file.
While they were waiting, Boyd gave Drake his cellular phone number. âFor now, Iâm going to stay in the background. Iâll let her contact you when she hears from her aunt, then you contact me. Because my cell phone isnât a secure line, ask me out to dinner like weâre old friends. That will be my signal to contact with officer Polinari.
âYouâre not going to tap her phone and try to trace Leonaâs call when it comes in?â Drake asked.
âNo. I figure Garduchi will already have her place wired by now and I donât want him to know we know sheâs been contacted. I want him to think sheâs keeping her auntâs call in the family, so to speak.â
âGood idea.â
Entering with the file, Rebecca eyed Boyd with open curiosity.
âHave you told anybody about the FBI visiting me?â Drake asked as he accepted the file.
âJust Katrina,â she replied, her gaze shifted to the file. âYou think sheâs involved somehow?â
âSheâs Leonaâs niece. She might be contacted.â
Good. Drake was playing this one close to the belt, Boyd noted. The fewer people who knew what was going on, the better.
âI donât want you to say anything about the FBI being here or about them talking to Katrina or taking a look at her file,â Drake ordered. âYou got that?â
âI wouldnât have been your secretary for ten years if I couldnât keep my mouth shut,â she snapped back, clearly upset about being accused of possibly gossiping.
Boyd also noted that the secretary didnât say anything in support of Katrina. In fact, there had been an edge in her voice that suggested she thought the lady cop could be right in the middle of whatever was going on.
And sheâd be right. He just wished he knew which side Officer Polenari was really on. Thanking Drake for his help, he headed back to the hillside.
Lewis had seniority but Boyd wanted this assignment. Heâd always thought of Lewis as being somewhat naive where women were concerned, and that could prove dangerous in this situation. By the time he joined his partner, heâd planned out his argument for being the one to pick up Leona.
âTheyâve already verified my identity,â he said when he finished filling Lewis in on the details. âBesides, as senior officer, you should be here to coordinate the teams keeping an eye on Garduchi.â
Lewis grinned. âShe even prettier up close?â
Boyd scowled. âPretty as a copperhead basking in the sun.â
Approval showed on Lewisâs face. âEver the cynic. Good. Thatâll keep you alive.â His expression darkened. âBut I donât like the idea of you going alone.â
âThatâs one of Leonaâs stipulations. We donât want her to balk.â
âAll right,â Lewis agreed grudgingly. âBut watch your back.â
âI always do.â
Lewis still didnât look happy. âIâm counting on your motherâs Apache blood to give you an edge.â
âIâll be fine,â Boyd assured him.
Chapter 3
A lthough Boydâs original plan was to stay away from Officer Polenari until contact with her aunt was made, the more he thought about this, the less he liked it. Not only was there the possibility that Garduchiâs protection wasnât enough to keep money-hungry bounty hunters away from her or that outside talent might not even get the word that Garduchi didnât want her touched, but Garduchi might decide that he should keep her by his side.
Or, Katrina Polenari could have a plan of her own. When she discovered he was on to her, she could have made up the story about her aunt wanting to come in. She could be planning to disappear just like her aunt and join up with Leona so the two of them could enjoy the money Leona had skimmed from Garduchi.
Or, maybe inside she was cold as ice like her father
