responsible.â Mudge turned to survey the class. âAnd I promised you all then that if I ever found someone eating lollies again in class, Iâd make an example of that person.â
âYes, Mr Mudge.â
âWarner, Iâm determined to teach you something, if itâs the last thing I do.â Now Mudgeâs whole head was purple. It looked like a giant eggplant with hair. âThatâs it. Instead of playing sport on Friday you can help me polish the lawn bowls. And if thereâs any time left over, Iâm sure Mrs Trundle will be able to put you to good use.â
Mudge bared his teeth in an evil grin. âSo that means youâll miss the cricket match this week. Youâre going to have to learn the hard way.â
âMr Mudge?â Tay had her hand up. âI . . .â
Mudge shook his head sadly. âTay, no doubt youâre feeling sorry for Warner, but he deserves everything he gets. Heâll never learn, otherwise. So I donât want to hear any more about it.â
He peered around the room. âIâm sure someone else could take Warnerâs place in Fridayâs game. Any volunteers?â
Bella Ferosiâs hand shot up. âIâm an excellent cricketer, Mr Mudge,â she said. âIâve never joined the cricket team because Iâm the netball captain, as everyone knows.â She looked around the room, searching for confirmation. âBut we have a bye in netball this week, so Iâd be happy to captain the cricket team.â
Grinning maliciously, Mudge looked across at Sunil. âWell, Iâll suggest that to Ms Maro,â he said. âIâm sure sheâd be happy to give you a turn as cricket captain, Bella. Itâs good to allow others the opportunity to shine, donât you agree, Deep?â
Davey eyed Sunil. His friend had that zombie look again. Sunil was proud to be captain of both the school team and their club team, the Sandhill Sluggers, and he had every right to be â he was a great captain, even if he did sometimes let slip the odd word or two to the other side.
Bella, on the other hand, was the bossiest person Davey had ever met. A cricket team with Bella and Mo in it was a team Davey would never want to join. He shook his head in despair.
âDonât worry, Shorty,â Mo whispered. âIâll take care of those Batfish.â He giggled. âYou can count on me.â
CHAPTER 7
TRAINING TRAUMA
âJust because you canât play doesnât mean you canât come to training.â Sunil had his arm around Daveyâs shoulder as they rounded the toilet block and headed across C playground.
âYeah, same as me,â Kevin said. âIâm still going to training. Itâs better than sitting around doing nothing.â
They reached the cricket pitch. Some of the team were already there, but Ms Maro was yet to arrive.
âWhat about Bella?â Davey was in a funk. âThey canât make her captain!â
âNah, thatâll never happen.â Sunil sounded his usual happy self. âIâll eat Moâs stinky hat if they make Bella captain.â
Davey was about to make Sunil shake on it â bets like these always cheered him up â when someone called out his name.
âDavey!â
He turned. Tay Tui was running towards them with Ivy Mundine close behind.
âIâm so sorry, bro!â Tay was panting. âI tried to tell Mr Mudge again just now, but he still wouldnât listen. It was like he didnât really want to know . . .â
âHe didnât. Heâs always like that.â Ivy frowned. âItâs bad luck, though. And now look whoâs coming.â She pointed.
They turned to see. Bella had just rounded the toilet block and was striding towards them. She was carrying a bat. When she saw them staring, she waved. âHi, everyone! You ready to get stuck
