grabbed a piece of pepperoni, stuffing it into his mouth without even taking a plate. âWhere are you rushing off to?â Lissa asked. But Nate didnât answer.
The night wore on, and Nate continued to avoid the girls. He didnât even join them when they made theircookie dough like he usually did. He did, however, come out to eat some of it after Lissa made a point of inviting him to join them.
Maybe Lilyâs right and he does have a crush on Bethany , Lissa thought. It would certainly explain her brotherâs strange behavior.
âYou have a little flour on your face,â was the first thing he said to Bethany. Lissa brushed it off for her, and they all laughed.
When everyone came off their sugar high, the girls settled into Lissaâs room for the night. Nate had wandered off without saying good night. Lissa quickly spread out her sleeping bag and sat cross-legged on the floor as Olivia, Lily, and Bethany unrolled their sleeping bags.
âOuch!â Bethany cried suddenly, her hands on her foot. âWhat was that?â
Everyone laughed. âSorry, thatâs Howard,â Lissa said.
âWhat? Who?â Bethany seemed panicked, and the girls laughed even harder.
âHoward the cat,â Lissa explained quickly. âHe ambushes peopleâs feet.â
She reached under the bed and pulled out a long, sleek black cat with pretty yellow eyes. She held himin her arms, her face close to his as she cooed lovingly, âYouâre an ambusher, arenât you, Howard? Can you please not ambush the newcomer? Thanks, Iâd appreciate it.â She let him down, and he scurried right back under the bed, ready to ambush again.
They all got into their sleeping bags and turned out the light. But no one was ready for sleep.
âLetâs interview Bethany,â Olivia suggested. âLike the interviews we did in history class. Everyone gets to ask her a question.â
Bethany giggled. âSure, as long as I can reserve the right not to answer,â she said.
âWeâll go easy on you,â Lissa assured her. âOkay, Iâll start. Do you like Old Warwick so far?â
Bethany answered right away. âSure. Itâs really different from New York City, though. Itâs much quieter. But I like living at the beach, and schoolâs okay so far.â
Now it was Oliviaâs turn. âWhoâs in your family?â she asked.
âWell, Iâm an only child,â Bethany said. âMy parents are working a lot, and my aunt Mimi lives with us. Sheâs supposed to keep an eye on me when theyâre not around, but sheâs getting a little forgetful. Sheâs, like, not even that oldyet, but sheâs starting to have problems with her memory.â
âMy grandmother had that,â Lissa said, nodding sympathetically.
Now it was Lilyâs turn. âDo you think Nate is cute?â she asked boldly.
In the dark, no one could see Bethanyâs shy smile. âI reserve the right not to answer,â she said slyly.
âThat means you think he is!â Lily crowed.
âWell, I sort of had a boyfriend in New York, and he was really cute,â Bethany said, trying to change the subject.
âReally?â Lily asked. âWere you devastated to leave him?â
âWhatever ⦠we just went to the movies a few times. Itâs not like I was going to marry him. I spent most of my free time with my friends. I had three best friends, and weâve been friends since preschool,â Bethany said. âI miss them more than him,â she added, a note of sadness in her voice.
âI bet,â Lily said. âI canât imagine having to move away from Olivia and Lissa. Okay, well, hereâs another question. Itâs different from the last one. Do you think Nate is hot ?â
âYouâre unbelievable!â Bethany laughed. âOkay, fine.Heâs really cute. But this is a girlsâ
