errors that needed to be fixed and, instead of asking this particular programmer to fix them, she just went ahead and corrected the issues herself.  He was an older gentleman and didn’t take well to being corrected by a not-yet-thirty year old woman.  And since he was a year away from retirement, as he’d plainly stated two months ago when she’d tried to help him, she didn’t see the need to show him how to do things correctly.  He was good enough to keep on the project, but not one of her stellar team members.
When the e-mail request popped up on her screen, she was irritated because she’d finally gotten the man out of her mind . Now he was “requesting” her presence in the conference room?  Was anything about this day going to be normal?
As she walked down the hallway, she tried hard to focus her mind on her work, to not think about the next confrontation with the man who had invaded her senses and, obnoxiously, wouldn’t get out.
Nina walked into the conference room and immediately her defenses rose.  Just seeing him again made her temper flare. “What?” she demanded angrily.  “Following me into the elevator and down the hallway wasn’t enough?  Disrupting my morning routine didn’t give you enough kicks?  Now you think you can summon me to a meeting?”  She was bristling with irritation and couldn’t hide it.  Every rational thought was telling her to calm down and respect this police officer, or detective or whatever he called himself.  But rational thought wasn’t in charge as she stepped into the conference room.  She felt like she was in a battle, but wasn’t really sure what the war was about.  She had to admit that this man was getting under her skin like no other male had ever been able to do before.
Brock knew that this Ms. Jansen was a suspect, but just her bristly nature and the fire in those gorgeous blue eyes turned him on.  He actually had to shift slightly as his body reacted instantly to her feistiness.  “I have some more questions for you.”
Nina crossed her arms over her chest.  “And who gave you the right to summon me and ask me questions?” she blew out her breath again, shaking her head.  “I don’t know what’s going on here today, but it doesn’t have anything to do with me and I have a lot of work to do.”
She spun around on her heel and was about to walk away when she heard the man’s voice. “Stay right there,” he commanded in a deep, authoritative voice that sent strange shivers throughout her whole body.
Brock stood up and walked around the table until he was towering over her.  “A man died last night.  That means you’re going to stay here and answer my questions until I tell you I’m finished.  And if I have other questions, I’ll expect you to answer those as well.  And I’d appreciate it if you would do it with a smile on your pretty face, but it isn’t a requirement.  Just a preference.”
Nina jerked back, her eyes wide with surprise and disbelief.  “Died?  Who died?” she asked, her voice softer this time.  She shook her head and looked around as if trying to place the missing person.  “Everyone showed up for work today.  No one is missing.”
Brock raised an eyebrow at that.  “No one?”
Nina went through the p eople on her team, mentally taking an attendance.  “Well, everyone from my team is here,” she whispered.  “Of course, I don’t know the people from the other teams.”  She seemed to fall into one of the conference room chairs.  “Who died?”
Brock wasn’t sure he believed her act.  If it was an act, she was pretty dammed good and pretending.  “Jared Silverberg?  Your boss?” he prompted.
Nina stared back at him, her beautiful blue eyes showing absolutely no emotion other than a blank stare.  Then the anger flared once more.  “Jared isn’t dead,” she came right back with a furious voice and stood up, livid with the prank someone was trying to pull.
