other way,â Joe said. He moved to the door while Frank kept watch behind them.
âItâs unlocked,â Joe said, âand I hear someone outside.â
He and Frank burst through the door into the alley behind. As they exited, they nearly plowed into a swarthy man with a dark bandanna, who was pushing a trash cart and toting a broom. Letteringabove the pocket on the manâs jumpsuit read âJose.â The man looked startled to see the teens, but didnât appear to be in any hurry to leave.
âDid you see someone come this way?â Joe asked.
Jose shook his head. âNo,â he replied. âNo one has come this way.â
Frankâs eyes narrowed. âAre you sure? What are you doing here?â
âIâm doing my job,â Jose said. âI clean the hangars at night. What are you doing here?â
âWe were chasing someone who broke into the administration building,â Joe said.
Joseâs eyes widened. âThatâs very bad,â he said. âYou have contacted security, yes?â
âWe sent for them,â Frank replied. âAre you sure you didnât see anyone?â
âI am sure.â
The brothers looked around but saw no sign of anyone else behind the hangar. There were several smaller maintenance buildings nearby, but no trace of the intruder.
Frank scratched his head. âWeâve lost him,â the elder Hardy said. He and Joe took a final look through the deserted hangar, then headed back toward the administration building.
âIâd have suspected that janitor,â Joe said as they walked, âbut he wasnât sweating or breathing hard.â
âThere must have been some other way out of the hangar that we didnât spot,â Frank said.
They saw a light on in the administratorâs office when they arrived. Having gone up the back stairs once again, they found Elise Flaubert and Jamal standing in the center of the office, amid the scattered papers. With them was a middle-aged, droopy-faced security guard whose badge read âMitchum.â
âSo, you didnât get a good look at who did this?â Mitchum asked Jamal.
âSorry,â Jamal replied. âHe knocked me down before I could recognize him. My friends, Frank and Joe, went after him, though.â
âBut we didnât catch him,â Frank said, entering the room.
âSorry,â Joe added. âHe lost us in one of the hangars.â
âWell,â Ms. Flaubert said, âit doesnât look as if anythingâs been taken. These show registration papers are in a real mess, though.â
âWhy would someone break in, then not take anything?â Frank asked.
âIâll ask the questions here,â Mitchum said. âYou think youâre a detective or something? Maybe you boys interrupted this thief before he could take anything.â
âWhy mess up the place then?â Joe asked.
âMaybe he couldnât find what he was looking for,â Mitchum replied. âIs the safe okay, Elise?â
Elise Flaubert opened a closet in one wall toreveal a bulky old safe about the size of a minifridge. âLooks fine,â she said.
âThe cops will want to talk to you boys,â Mitchum said, noticing the flashing red-and-blue lights appearing outside the frosted windows. âYou all wait here. Iâm going to check the grounds and see if I can find any clues.â
âGood luck,â Frank said.
Mitchum scowled at him.
âHas the welcoming dinner finished?â Joe asked Ms. Flaubert.
âNo,â she replied. âI had stepped out to attend to some business when I ran into Jamal. I hope this doesnât turn into a big incident; I donât want anything to disrupt the show.â
âI think thatâs probably up to the police,â Frank said, looking at the stern-faced officer coming through the office door.
It took the three friends about an hour
