up her body and found her lips. “I’ll make it happen,” he promised. “But right now?”

Lena started to shift away when he kept her close to his chest.

“Right now I want you to dream of all the good times we’ll have,” he said. “And we will have them, Lena.”

She nodded and felt his arms surrounding her body as he pushed her deeper into sheets. Dragging the sheets over her satisfied frame, Lena cuddled against his side. Even as Jax pulled out, his arms tightened, and she rested her head against the sound of his pounding heart.

“Is that for me, too?” she asked.

“Of course.” Jax fondled her hair and stroked her back as they came to rest together.

She just met his eyes and felt his fingers moving towards her lips. As soon as Lena spied his hand, she wrapped her lips around his finger, and she kissed him there, smiling as she suckled his flesh and sighing when he pushed away and resumed stroking her sides.

“Rest now,” he whispered. “It’s been a hell of a day.” She groaned and knew he was right as he folded her in his arms and kissed her brow. “Tomorrow will be brighter, Lena. I’ll make that happen for you.”

She slipped into sleep and smiled on the back of a dream. She saw Jax working on his bike as she wiped down a countertop and gazed at him through a great glass window. In the space of her dream, there was no worry, no fear, and she started to slip away from the sink as she reached for him with a wanting hand.

Jax tossed a wrench aside and started to take her into his arms when a dark beard started to pour across his face, and Lena wheeled back at the sight of Eric Stiles coming into view.

No! I don’t want you! He said you would never…

But Eric was suddenly on top of her, clawing at her clothes, and as she heard Jax’s screams from what felt like a great distance, she started up from under the sheets and clasped her hands to her heaving chest.

The strange bedroom felt safe. Because Eric wasn’t really there, and she felt sure that Artie would not give them away. Feeling for the other side of the bed, Lena expected Jax’s body under her hands. And she flinched when she realized no one was there.

Slipping out from under the sheets, she draped his discarded shirt over her body. Lena started to call out his name when she held her tongue and moved towards the front door. Daring to take a few steps towards the shed, she thought better of looking for his bike, and her mind whirled at the thought that he might have left her in the night. Did he hope that she would understand and simply stay put? Lena still had no idea of where she was and how she could ever hope to make her way back home, and she cursed under her breath as she returned to the house. Suddenly, noises emanated from another room.

The sound of running water told her someone was showering the dirt of the road from his back, and again she pictured Eric finding her and having his way with her. And Jax was nowhere to be found in her mind or in the flesh. No way he would just leave her to wake up alone, and Lena peeled through the drawers, her hands settling on a butcher’s knife as she moved slowly toward the cracked door.

Lena clutched the base of the blade of tighter as she pushed the door completely open, ready to strike at the first sight of trouble.

    CHAPTER FOUR

    “Where the hell is he?”

Lena lurched towards the drawn tan shower curtain, the knife poised under her hand as she ripped the sheet away and prepared to strike.

    “Hey! Hold up a sec!”

The edge of the knife was nearly at her would-be-assailant’s cheek when she gasped at the sight of Jax’s glistening, nude body dripping into the tub, his hand hard around the base of the knife as he pulled it from her grasp, and the blade fell to the shower floor.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he asked.

Lena’s knees knocked together, and she
