wake up in
a good mood?”
“Fair enough,” I said.
“Now rest. If you need
anything, there’s a cell phone under the couch. Call me.”
Ace collected the stuff he
had taken off and left the room. I hesitated for a few minutes on what I should
actually do. I sat holding the blanket to my chest and stared at the closed
door.
What was actually happening
back there?
Was he going to live?
Where the hell was I?
The thoughts pounded at me
over and over until I finally decided to rest me head and heart for a few
minutes. I climbed the couch and put the blanket on my body. It was the most
comfortable blanket and couch combination I had ever felt in my entire life. It
was like resting on a cloud and within minutes my eyes were shut and didn’t
open.
If I had any dreams they
weren’t strong enough to remember.
I felt something touch my
shoulder and I groaned.
I didn’t want to open my
eyes and be taken away from the comfort of the couch. But at the same time my
mind yelled at me to wake up.
Something must have happened
with Jonathan Black.
Something could be wrong.
Something could be right.
All at once I thought about everything
he had said to me... right down to his last words...
I love you.
It shook me to my core. I
wasn’t sure what it meant or if Jonathan Black really meant to say it.
“Isabella Grace.”
I heard his voice and held
my eyes shut as tight as I could. I wanted to go to him in my dream. I wanted
to be with him in my dream. I wanted to feel it all and experience a place where
love conquered everything else.
But I was being shaken and I
heard my name again and again.
“Isabella Grace...
please...”
I rolled to my back and
opened my eyes.
And there he was.
Jonathan Black.
Sitting on the edge of the
couch.
Looking normal.
Healthy.
Sexy.
Looking like he normally
looked.
I sat up and let out a small
cry.
“Jonathan,” I whispered and
threw my arms around him. “You’re okay.”
“Of course I am,” he said.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“How long has it been?”
“Twelve hours. We have to
leave, preferably now.”
“Leave... you realize...
Katherine...”
“We do not speak the name,”
Jonathan bellowed at me. His eyes lit up and his nostrils flared. He looked
ready to kill someone. “Leave it as you knew it once before.”
And just like that,
Katherine became ‘K’ again.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I’ve
just been so scared...”
“Of course you have,”
Jonathan said. He placed a finger to my lips. “I never once doubted your existence
and care for me, Isabella Grace. But I’m fine. And we have work to do.”
“Work?” I whispered,
Jonathan’s finger lingering at my lips.
“Yes. To stand idle is to
forgive. And I never forgive. Nor do I forget.”
Before I could speak another
work, the door opened and the doctor joined us.
Dr. Ace.
“Mr. Black,” he said. “I
would have preferred you to stay in the room.”
“And I’m sure you’d prefer
to be paid,” Jonathan said.
Dr. Ace smiled. “Who
doesn’t?”
“I had to come see her,”
Jonathan said. “To make sure she was alive.”
“I told you she was.”
“I just had to see.”
“I understand.” Dr. Ace
opened a folder and examined it. “Your bloodstream is clear now. Nothing
leftover and no side effects. Another hour away and you would have had
permanent damage. At least we knew what we were dealing with this time.”
“This time?” I whispered.
I was tired of hearing this time .
“I was poisoned once
before,” Jonathan said. “By my father.”
I gasped.
I thought about John Black,
Jonathan’s father, and it made my lip curl. He was a cruel man, and while he
sat in prison for two murders he didn’t commit, I still didn’t trust him. Not
for a second.
“Your father...”
“He thought he could stop
me,” Jonathan said. “And he was very wrong.”
“Also very stupid,” Dr. Ace.
“If I may say that...”
“I don’t mind,” Jonathan
said.
“He used the same
