mouth in a heated kiss. She tasted her sex on him as he devoured her with his lips and tongue.
Clutching him as if she was never going to let him go, she pressed a kiss against his neck, noting the throbbing of his pulse. His rigid cock brushed her thigh, only inches away from her sex.
Oh, why could he not make love to her? They were fated to be together, the fire they brought forth consuming them both. Could he not see that?
Roarke sat up and helped adjust her clothing, then tucked his still hard shaft in his breeches. “It will be dawn soon. We must go before someone finds us.”
“Go? And then what? After what we have just shared, has nothing changed between us?” With a wistful smile he pressed a light kiss to her lips. “What could possibly change, my faerie? You are still betrothed to Braedon of Greenbriar. As it is, we should never have done what we just did. My apologies to you, princess, for taking advantage.”
He was sorry for their love play, as if he’d just made a terrible mistake. Her joy of a few minutes ago evaporated, replaced by utter defeat. Her heart wrenched into a knot of pain. “I see. Being with me was only to release your lust?”
His tight-lipped visage told her the answer. “It meant much more than that, my faerie. But you are bound to another. I must honor your betrothal to King Braedon.” Just like that, he would let her go, into the arms of another man. He cared nothing for her. Fighting back the pool of tears welling in her eyes, she nodded. “I thought I mattered more to you than that. I thought…”
From the resigned look on his face she knew it was pointless to tell him how she felt.
    “We cannot fight fate, Solara.”
If he wanted to, he could try. By all that was magic, she was certainly trying to rail against the cruel destiny bestowed upon her.
Clearly, Roarke did not want to. She wasn’t enough for him to fight for. “I understand. Goodbye, Roarke.”
Before he had a chance to speak again, she opened her wings and flew above him, racing to the stairs leading to her quarters. Once safely inside her room, she shut and bolted the door, then threw herself face down on the bed.
Being with Roarke had only made things worse. Now she knew her feelings for him were genuine, and yet he would do nothing to change her fate.
His honor was admirable, even if she hated it right now. He would not betray his king or the southern king. Yet, Solara knew now that she could not honor her vow to marry. Something had to be done.
Something had to change. What or how, she did not know.
Wiping away the moisture on her cheeks, she went in search of Trista.

Chapter Three
“Solara is gone! I cannot find her!”
Roarke’s head shot up at the sound of Trista’s voice, dread turning his blood cold.
She entered the hall in a rush and threw herself into Noele’s arms.
“What? What do you mean she is gone?” Noele’s frantic look mirrored Roarke’s feelings.
Trista’s golden-flecked face was streaked with tears. “I went to find her this morning because she usually awakens before the rest of us. Her room was empty, her bedcovers undisturbed. I looked everywhere for her, Noele. I cannot find her!”
“Are you certain?” Garick asked as he stepped beside his wife. A concerned frown etched lines on his brow.
“Yes. I can feel it. She no longer resides at Winterland.” Garick turned to Noele, who closed her eyes and became very still. When she opened them a few seconds later, she nodded. “Trista speaks truth. Solara is not within the castle grounds.” Roarke remained silent and waited for instructions from Garick, despite his immediate desire to strip the castle walls bare and find Solara. Which was ridiculous since Noele had just stated she was nowhere on the grounds. And yet, he wanted to search for her, as if he could find her when no one else was able to.
He could not reveal his feelings for the faerie, as she was not his to worry over.
But worry he did. After Garick
