anymore Jasmine, but we really have to get you to the hospital.”
“Whoever said I wasn’t still mad,” I said jokingly as I leaned into him resting my head on his shoulder.
He revved the engine of his car, and we were off. It seemed like a cliché scene from all of the chick flicks I had caught Keisha watching. A couple loves each other, has a big fight, makes up, then they drive off into the sunset blah blah. I smirked to myself when I thought about how cliché we seemed. The only thing that wasn’t stereotypical about our relationship was that he was wealthy and Caucasian, and I was African American. As he drove the Porsche down the highway I couldn’t stop myself from admiring him. I felt all of my self-confidence come back as soon as I knew that he was by my side. I no longer had any doubts about the man that he was. He wasn’t expecting to see me today, and I highly doubt that he would have gone so far to make a fake binder with fake projects in them just to convince me that he was a good man.
20 minutes later we were at the hospital. He turned off the ignition and jumped out of the drivers seat to open the passenger side. He unbuckled my seat belt and picked me up in his strong burly arms. I could catch sight of some of the nurses from the inside of the hospital giving me jealous glares as he carried me into the emergency ward.
He sat me down in one of the chairs in the waiting room and went to the reception desk to check me in. Within a matter of 2 minutes, a nurse was by my side.
“This way Jasmine, the doctor will see you now.”
I got up on one leg and limped after the nurse as she led me into a private waiting room. James followed in closely behind her and closed the door as soon as the nurse had left.
“How ya feelin?” James asked.
“On top of the world,” I said with a smile.
The doctor walked in with a chart and looked me up and down.
“Hello Jasmine, looks like James here did a good job bandaging you up but I’d like to take a blood test as a precaution and give you a tetanus shot if that’s alright with you.”
“Not a problem at all doc.”
He came around to the right side of the bed and tied some rubber around my arm to make my vein stand out. I had been scared of blood since I was a child and squeamishly looked the other direction as he drew the blood out of my vein. I felt him release the rubber from my arm and heard the sound of him flicking the needle. Shit here it comes I thought to myself. I felt a sharp pinch in my upper shoulder and could feel the chemicals of the tetanus shot seep into my blood stream. Another prick, and I felt the needle towards my knee.
“Just going to freeze the area a little bit before I put in the stitches, nothing to worry about.”
I continued to look away and James came over to the left side of the bed to hold my hand. Before I knew it, the last of the 7 stitches were in place and I couldn’t feel a thing in my knee!
“You’ve done well Jasmine, I’ll be back in a couple hours with your blood results. Everything should be fine.”
The doctor left the room, leaving James and I alone together.
“How’s my princess doing?”
“I’d be doing better if you climbed in bed with me.”
James sat down on the bed and lay down next to me. I cuddled up close to him and fell asleep with my head resting on his chest.
I must have been out for a couple hours and I
