picked up Wiglaf and Angus and dangled them in front of her face. Up close, Wiglaf caught a whiff of lilac. Was the dragon wearing perfume?
âAre you knights-in-training?â the dragon asked.
âS-s-s-sort of,â said Wiglaf.
The dragon sighed. âReal knights would never make such a mess inside my cave.â
âWasnât usââ Angus began.
âWasnât us!â the twins chanted in singsong voices. Then they began snorting with laughter.
The dragon whirled around. âWho said that?â
âWho said that?â taunted the twins.
The dragon lunged toward where the snorts were coming from.
Angus and Wiglaf swung wildly from her claw.
âCanât get us!â cried the twins. They dashed out of the dragonâs reach, then whirled around to face her.
âChaaaaaarge!â cried the twins, waving their stalactite daggers.
âMy stars!â exclaimed the dragon, leaping back.
Bilge and Maggot both poked their stone daggers into the dragonâs back legs. They stuck her over and over.
âOw! Ow!â the dragon cried. âStop that, you naughty lads!â
But Bilge and Maggot didnât stop.
The dragon dropped Wiglaf and Angus down on the cave floor.
Wiglaf and Angus tried to make a run for it. But with their ankles tied together, they only toppled down in a tangled heap.
âNonny nonny poo poo!â Bilge and Maggot shouted at the dragon. âWeâre not scared of you!â
âNo?â said the dragon. Twin clouds of angry black smoke puffed out of her purple ears. âI can fix that.â
Wiglaf and Angus watched in horror as the dragonâs yellow crest rose up on her head until it looked like a huge sail. Orange sparks shot from the dragonâs eyes. Her pearls began to glow like globes of red-hot lava. She swiped at the twins with a long, hooked claw.
Bilge and Maggot dodged her and took off running. They zoomed across the cavern and into the tunnel.
The dragon opened her jaws and then spewed out a huge tongue of orange flame. WHOOSH! Then she put down her purse, dropped to all fours, and raced down the tunnel after the twins.
âWe have to get this rope off,â said Wiglaf. He bent over and yanked off his left boot. Angus did the same with his right. Both lads wiggled their feet out of the rope. They pulled their boots back on and jumped up.
âHow do we get out of here?â cried Angus. âThe tunnel is the only way out!â
âCome on!â said Wiglaf, running toward the tunnel. âIf the dragon comes, we can duck into one of the side passages.â
Keeping close together, Wiglaf and Angus felt their way along the damp cave wall. They had not gone far when they saw a light ahead. They heard clanking. And giggling.
Wiglaf and Angus crept up on the twins. Bilge had Ericaâs mini-torch and was waving it around.
âShhhh!â cautioned Wiglaf when he reached them.
âAre you lunatics?â whispered Angus.
âLaughing and yucking it up when an angry dragon is after you? Be still!â
âBe still!â mimicked the twins.
âWhy did you not run out of the cave and escape when you had the chance?â asked Wiglaf.
âWhy should we?â said Bilge.
âYeah,â said Maggot. âItâs our cave.â
âNot really,â said Angus. âThat dragon will be back any minute. Come on!â He grabbed Maggot by his rusty chest plate.
âHey!â yelled Maggot. âCut it out!â
THUD! THUD!
Wiglaf grabbed the torch from Bilge and tamped it out.
The dragonâs approaching footsteps echoed in the dark tunnel. She was heading back toward the cavern.
âWait until she passes us,â Wiglaf whispered. âThen weâll make a break for it.â
The four lads huddled together. For once Bilge and Maggot kept still.
The dragonâs footsteps thundered louder and louder. She galloped past them, heading toward the
